The Rights’ Monitoring Group (RMG) says 600
observers will be deployed in Ekiti to monitor the
re-run of the governorship election in the state on
the 25 of this month.
Addressing a press conference in Lagos on the
preparation for the election, the national
co-coordinator of RMG Olufemi Akinbule Aduwo said
notable activists, the media, academics, religious
bodies, women
organizations and other professional bodies will
monitor the re-run.
According to Aduwo RMG remains the only organization
that has observed all bye -elections and re-run
elections organized by INEC so far conducted since
January 2008 and the American and Ghanaian general
elections last year.
RMG appealed to all observers and political parties
to conduct themselves within the provisions of the
electoral laws 2006, section 62 which recognized
only accredited observers while section 46
recognised polling agents and political parties by
complying fully with the section.
“No serving chairman or members of local government
or area council, commissioner, deputy governor,
minister or any other person holding political
office under any tier of government who has not
resigned his
appointment at least three months before election
cannot serve as a polling agent to any political
party either at any polling centre designated for
collation of results”
Aduwo urged members of OPC not to allow politicians
use them to foment trouble during the election and
urged all observers to conduct themselves according
to INEC guidelines for election observation 2007
and ECOWAS code of conduct for observers.
