CAN President
At the emergency meeting of the executive
committee and heads of churches in Nigeria which held today
January 7th 2012 at the
National Christian
Centre Abuja, reports received from around the country have
brought out the following observations:
1 .That there have been continuous killing
of Christians and Southerners in the following towns:Suleja in
Niger state, Madalla in Niger State ,Damaturu,Yobe state, Gombe
,Gombe State,Mubi, Adamawa state, Jimeta/ Yola ,Adamawa
state,Potistikum, Yobe state and continuous killing of
Christians in Borno state
2 .That the pattern of these killings thus
suggest to us a systematic ethnic and religious cleansing.
3. That we are reminded by the occurrences
of these killings of the genesis of the civil war that took
place here in Nigeria. If we look back we will remember that
this was exactly how it began. Killings like this in different
places and then urging southerners to go and leave the north and
gradually it exploded and ended
up becoming a civil war.We are seeing the same thing happening
right now,it’s happening before our eyes.
4. We draw attention to the fact that CAN
and Christians in this country have exercised patience and
continue to do so at great expense.
5.That we have continued to call on the
security agencies
and political office
holders to assist us in stopping these senseless killings to no
avail.
We therefore as Christians have decided to
take our fate in our hands
and have resolved as follows:
1.That we have decided to work out means to
defend ourselves against these senseless killings.
2.That all Christian faithful should
continue in prayers and be security conscious.
3.That we consider the inaction of
governors of some of the states to be unsatisfactory and we hold
them responsible for these heinous killings of people taking
place in their states. We will not take it lightly. We are seeing
and from reports we have received, a lot of our leaders even
approached them and they won’t even sit down to talk with
them.In some states
from what we hear some traditional rulers will not even listen
to them. They will not open their doors .We don’t accept this and
we believe that if Nigeria is for us all then wherever you are
as a Nigerian living in any part of this country you must be
treated as a
Nigerian. So we are holding the governors of such states
responsible for such things and for such killings.
4. It should be noted that all
communications from the President of CAN remain legitimate as
the true position of Christians in Nigeria.
Thank you very much.
