The Spiritual Leader of the
Cherubim and Seraphim Movement
Church World Wide, Mosr Rev.
Samuel Abidoye today expressed
concern over the current state
of affairs in the country which
has led to bombings and
kidnapping, saying the country
is in dire need of God’s
intervention.
The clergy who addressed
Journalists ahead of the lent
season which begins on Wednesday
also condemned the increasing
wave of violence and intolerance
among the political class in the
country and asked Nigerians to
use the holy season to ask God
for credible and selfless
leaders at all levels of
governance.
According to him, it was a good
omen that this year’s elections
is coming during the lent
period, pointing out that it has
become imperative that Nigerians
should seek God’s intervention
in the conduct of this year’s
general elections.
He noted that what the nation
needs
at this point in time is
the emergence of God-fearing and
credible leaders who, rather
than pursuing their selfish
interests, would serve the
people who elected them into
office.
While expressing concern over
the manner in which Nigerian
politicians have continued to
compromise the nation’s
electoral process for their
selfish ends, he regrets that
the imposition of candidates
during elections in the country
had paved the way for the
emergence of inept leadership at
every level of governance in
Nigeria.
Abidoye contends that the
Nigerian nation has failed to
live up to expectations after 50
years of independence because
the votes of the electorate have
not been allowed to count in
deciding those who occupy
political and public offices in
the country, adding that this is
due mostly to the fact that
those saddled with
responsibility of leadership
have, in most cases turned out
to be irresponsible and
impervious to the yearnings and
basic needs of ordinary
Nigerians.
He argued that the desperation
being exhibited by politicians
to occupy elective political and
public offices would be to the
detriment of the country and
condemned the increasing wave of
politically motivated violence
and bombings in recent times in
parts of the country.
He advised the government and
the opposition in the country to
learn to work together rather
than aiming at each others’
throat.
On
the current development
within the judiciary, the
clergyman said that the Nigerian
judiciary should take adequate
steps to restore its dignity and
respect by not allowing itself
to be further compromised by
selfish politicians.
He expressed the believe that
the much-needed economic growth
and development would continue
to elude the Nigerian nation
unless the Federal Government
demonstrates
serious commitment in
its crusade against corruption
in all facets of life and at all
levels of governance.
He noted that the nation’s
economy would recover only when
there was no more room for
corrupt political and public
office holders to dip their
hands in public treasury to
satisfy their greed and selfish
interests.
He noted that “Nigeria needs
God’s intervention. We’ll soon
be going into the April
elections. We want it to be free
and fair. We want God-fearing
men in public offices. I’m
calling on Christians and all
Nigerians to use the Lenten
season to pray for free and fair
elections. I want to appeal to
those standing elections to have
it at the back of their minds
that they are going into office
to serve the interest of the
people. A senator earning
N20million a month is
outrageous.
“The funny thing about Nigeria
is that everybody wants to be in
the ruling party. They only
think about the money they will
get and that’s why they make it
a do-or-die affair. There should
be no killing or maiming. The
opposition and the government
should learn to work together in
the interest of the people.
“The judiciary should
re-organize itself. Let us have
confidence in the judiciary.
Today, there are
bomb blasts everywhere.
Where is security and safety in
this country? We should pray
that God should put a stop to
these bomb blasts and political
violence. Nigeria is one and
should remain united. Nobody
prays that Nigeria should break
up. We can only survive as one
united country,” Abidoye said.
