YarAdua recognizes Jonathan as Acting President ...as South South threatens secession
By Danlami Nmodu        Newsdiaryonline  Thurs Feb 24,2010

In what appears like a u-turn from the position a day earlier,President Umaru Musa YarAdua's spokesman has confirmed that Mr Goodluck Jonathan remains the Acting President and Commander in Chief of the armed Forces

Segun Adeniyi who spoke on NTA  said the relationship between YarAdua and Jonathan had always been cordial.“Good. Very cordial relation. I know for a fact that when the president was in Saudi Arabia medical report of the president was being sent to the Acting President on the instruction of the president. The last one last Friday, Dr. Salisu the president’s chief physician, sent to the Acting President through the ambassador, I was copied, I have a copy of the medical report on the president’s health.”

He also swiftly moved to dispel  any hint of rift among presidential staff .Said Adeniyi:“We run one presidency and the Acting President has already called for a meeting and I believe the meeting will hold tomorrow to brief us on how things will go and how he will run the presidency and everybody is included, especially those who just returned from Saudi Arabia. So it’s just one presidency and we are all under Mr Jonathan now as the acting president and commander in chief until the president returns to office fully.”

But today's statement is almost a reversal  of earlier  position because the same Adeniyi refered to Goodluck as Vice president just yesterday while saying that Jonathan would take charge of state matters
Adeniyi appears to have spoken against the background of the massive reports today that Turai YarAdua has taken control of the presidency much to the chagrin of all.The spokesman said,“It’s been very unfair to the first lady at the time she is nursing her husband. So there is no such thing and you don’t expect the Acting President to report to the first lady, it is abnormal and it won’t happen. What the Acting President actually said was that he was going to see the first lady and ask about the husband, that is the president, and probably see him. To me, it is a normal situation, which I believe, is the natural thing to do.”

In spiteof Adeniyi's statement, Turai needs to convince may that she is really not a destabilising force in the presidency. It is most probable that the U turn today was a fallout of pressure from stakeholders for sanity to prevail.

In fact this announcement of YarAdua's recognition came just as reports  emerged that the South South leaders are threatening to secede from Nigeria if the constitution of Nigeria is undermined. The South South leaders alleged that there have been reports of movements in military formations across the country.Any unconstitional transfer of power Chief Edwin Clark ,leader of the South South said, will put Nigeria in trouble.Clark said Nigeria is not a monarchy where where one woman will dictate to everybody. This is clearly an indication that Turai's actions has raised political tension.

There may be little surprise therefore  that the YarAdua men made a u-turn today.Newsdiaryonline also learnt that the senate leadership felt insulted by the statement YarAdua's handlers made on Wednesday which referred to Jonathan as  Vice President.

National assembly members saw it as a declaration of hostilities and they were gearing for a showdown with YarAdua and his handlers. The YarAdua cabal including Turai  had to do a volte-face to avert  the impending hammer  by the national assembly led by the senate.

The exact nature of the move by the national assembly remained unclear today. But there had been talks that the plot to impeach the president had reached an advanced stage before YarAdua was forced to return home by the Saudi King.
