Permanent Secretaries in Ogun State have asked the
Government to effect an eight percent reduction in
their gross monthly pay as their contribution to the
ongoing belt-tightening in response to the global
economic meltdown. Presenting the letter from the
permanent secretaries giving effect to the reduction
to the Governor during the State Executive Council
meeting in Abeokuta, the head of service, Chief Dipo
Odulate said the top echelon of the civil service
decided on the move to further strengthen the
various measures already taken by the Otunba Gbenga
Daniel administration to ensure that Ogun
ameliorates the effects of the economic downturn.
He enjoined the workforce to show greater
understanding of the economic situation especially
as the Ogun State Government has decided not to
downsize in spite of the significant reduction in
its revenue from the federation account. Chief
Odulate who had earlier joined the political office
holders in their voluntary decision to cut their
salaries by 12 percent said while it was the right
of workers to ask for improved welfare package, it
should be done within the context of the current
economic reality.
Responding to the gesture of the permanent
secretaries, Governor Daniel commended them for the
move which he said reflected the current economic
reality. The Governor enjoined all citizens to show
the same sensitivity to the global economic meltdown
which he said had come home in view of the declining
government revenue. The Governor assured the
citizens that issues relating to health,
infrastructures, economic development and security
would continue to be given top priority. He said the
various projects and road constructions going on in
the state were to ensure that the construction
sector which has the potentials to generate multiple
employments retains its vibrancy to cushion the
effect on the meltdown on the generality of the
people.
A statement by Adegbenro Adebanjo, chief press
Secretary to Gov.Daniel said at the end of its
deliberations the Executive council reeled out
further measure against the economic meltdown. The
council slashed the amount that can be approved by
certain categories of public officials. The inter
ministerial tenders board had its power of approval
reduced from N2 Million to N1 Million, Commissioners
from N500, 000, to N200, 000, and permanent
Secretaries from N250 to N100, 000. The measures are
meant to effect tighter control of government
spending.
