ORDEAL OF ACID VICTIM
BY EYO BASSEY, Niger Delta Region   newsdiaryonline.com   Monday June1,2009

Anyalewechi

A  female fuel attendant in Umuahia, Abia state, south east Nigeria may walk herself to jail if she is eventually convicted by the law court for conniving with another person to bath her colleague, Anyalewechi Onwuchekwa with acid. Though the dastardly act was done by one Ndubuisi Johnson who works in the same Bawas oil company but in another branch, he might have been paid by the principle suspect,
Amarachi Ijeomah to carry out the evil mission.

Problem started when Onwuchekwa allegedly reported Amarachi to the director of the company, Chief Uche Akwukwaegbu, for stealing the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira (N250,000) about US$930 from the company’s account being the cost of sales for the day. She was summarily made to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour as a deterrent to recurrence of such criminal tendencies. Though she conformed grudgingly, Amarachi vowed within her mind never to allow Onwuchekwa go “unpunished” for daring to tarnish her “reputation”.

In September 13, 2008 both Amarachi who is believed to be a house wife joined  forces with Ndubuisi to deal decisively with their enemy, Onwuchekwa for his “treachery”. Upon his return from an overseas trip, the director of the Bawas oil company, Akwukwaegbu ordered for a detailed account of the company’s income for the period he was away. Incidentally, the account did not in any way tally with the director’s expectation. Hence, he reordered for a fresh inventory which includes other branches of the company.

While on their way to their respective homes in anticipation of  regrouping for the great task of reconciling the account probably the day after, Amarachi was busy making telephone calls and flashes to unknown persons. She was actually driven to her house in the company’s car before the rest went to their different destinations.
Shortly afterwards, just as Onwuchekwa attempted to open the gate of his house, he felt a hot liquid substance on his body and this was later discovered to be an acid. The substance was poured on him by Johnson Ndubuisi, Amarachi’s alleged confidant who later escaped in a waiting 505 car and sped off to an unknown destination. “It was when I screamed that neighbors and relations came around and rushed me to the Federal Medical centre, Umuahia”, the victim narrated. It was discovered that the car Johnson escaped with was the same car Amarachi used the day she went to introduce her husband to Onwuchekwa.

The case has however been taken to zone 9 Umuahia and is presently receiving the attention of the Umuahia Magistrate court. The suspect had since been granted bail  Meanwhile, Onwuchekwa who is at the moment writhing  in agony as the acid has now affected his two eyes, has condemned the action of the director
whom he alleged has not done much to alleviate his problem. Since the dastardly incident, the victim alleged that Chief Akwukuaegbu only gave eighty five thousand naira (N85,000) for his up keep. He regretted that
despite his effort to rescue the company from the hands of internal dubs, he was shabbily maltreated in his  time of needs.
