INEC de-registers 7 Political Parties

The  fears of some opposition political parties that  the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC may deregister some of them were confirmed today as Professor Attahiru Jega,the commission’s chairman  announced the annulment of  seven political parties.Those deregistered include:

 1.Democratic Alternative (DA)
2. National Action Council (NAC)
3. National Democratic Liberty Party (NDLP)
4. Masses Movement of Nigeria (MMN)
5. Nigeria Peoples Congress (NPC)
6. Nigeria Elements Progressive Party (NEPP)
7. National Unity Party (NUP)

Jega said the action was carried out  "Pursuant to the provisions of S. 78 (7) (ii) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).He also pointed out that the affected parties failed to present candidates for the last elections.The certificates of registration of these parties have thus been withdrawn.

Also the move reduces the number of recognized parties from 65 to 58.
