Nigeria’s Supreme Court today reserved
ruling on the case which will determine whether the tenure of
five governor has elapsed. The parties to the case will be
informed by the apex court when the date for the ruling is
fixed.
The governors who incidentally all belong
to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party,PDP
include Ibrahim Idris(Kogi),Timipre Sylva(Bayelsa),Aliyu
Wammako(Sokoto), Murtala Nyako(Adamawa) and Liyel Imoke(Cross
River)
But two out of the
legal experts invited by
the apex court to advise it on the case suggested that the
governors be sacked .Professor Itsay Sagay(SAN) and Olukanyisola
Ajayi (SAN) said the supreme court should sack the governors but
Chief Richard Akinjide a former Attorney General of the
Federation advised the apex court to uphold the Appeal court
judgment which elongated the governors’
tenure.
Governors are watching the situation with
anxiety.A sack of the sitting governors means those of them
seeking reelection like Sylva, Imoke and Nyako will have to do
so from the discomfort of the political turf outside government
house.This is a scenario the
governors are anxious to avoid because it may make reelection a
much tougher battle.
