Divorcees plan mass protest in Kano
Written by Hassan A Karofi, Kano
Sunday, 11 January 2009 Sunday
Trust
Hajiya Atine AbdullahiMany divorcees are
expected to attend a mass rally in Kano city organised
by the National Association of Divorcees, Widows and the
Orphans of Nigeria, to protest the growing divorce rate
and “insufficient husbands in Kano
State.”
Organisers say the rally where “one
million” divorced women would come out to the streets
against marriage instability was the biggest in the
history of Nigeria. Executive Director of the
association, Hajiya Attine Abdullahi, said the rally
would hold in a fortnight and is expected to highlight
the incidences of divorce and what she called “a growing
social problem bedeviling the communities of Kano
State.”
The executive director, who addressed
newsmen shortly after the emergency meeting of the
national executive council of the association at the
Ministry for Local Govern-ment and Chieftaincy Affairs
in Kano, said the decision was necessitated by the
inability of the state House of Assembly to initiate
laws against the menace. improve the lot of divorcees,
but those laws are yet to see the light of day,” she
lamented.
The rally which was expected to start
from the emir’s palace would go through the city centre
to government house and would terminate at the state
House of Assembly, the association said. promulgate laws
that would improve the lot of divorcees, but those laws
are yet to see the light of the day,” she
lamented.
The rally which was expected to start
from the emir’s palace would go through the city centre
to the government house and would terminate at the state
House of Assembly, the association said.
“We have
concluded arrangements to invite one million divorcees
only to the city on the 29th of this month where we will
stage a rally to protest against the outrageous number
of divorcees currently sent out of their matrimonial
homes and of which no one is doing anything,” she
stressed.
The executive director called on the
people and those responsible for leadership to be
serious about what she called “a serious social problem
that has the capacity to impact negatively on the social
fabric of any society that chose to neglect
it.
“It is this seemingly neglect that we will
come out to protest and we hope the rally will equally
create awareness on the plight of these mothers as well
as draw the attention of the community to this serious
social problem that is not viewed with the seriousness
it deserves,” she said.
Attine explained that
women were concerned about the seemingly lack of
adequate attention to their plight even though they
(women) play significant roles to the development of any
society socially, economically, and security
wise.
“We hope the rally will not only draw the
attention of the leaders, but will also draw the
attention of our husbands who should know that the one
million divorcees that will be on the street on that day
are their failure for keeping their home fronts,” she
said.
Sunday Trust reports that last year, the
Kano State government released a report which showed
that over 80 per cent of marriages in the state were
unstable.
The report that had the state Ministry
of Women Affairs, NGOs, Adaidaita Sahu and others as
members found among other things absence of sincerity
during courtship, ignorance about the religious status
of the marriage institution, economic down turn, working
women phenomenon and materialism in marriage as some of
the causes of the surge in divorcees rate in the
state.

BRAD PITT'S NEW
MOVIE SAVES HIS MARRIAGE.
Posted Friday Dec.12, 2008
Brad Pitt says his new film saved his
relationship. The 44-year-old actor - who is
raising six children with partner Angelina
Jolie - admits starring as an elderly man
who ages backwards in "The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button" inspired him to re-evaluate
his priorities in life.
He said: "Angelina and I do not fight
anymore. What occurred to me on this film,
and also with the passing of Angelina's
mother Marcheline Bertrand last year, is
that there's going to come a time when I'm
not going to get to be with this person
anymore."
"I'm not going to get to be with my children
anymore. And so, if we have a flare-up, it
evaporates now. I don't want to waste time
being angry at someone I love." Brad added
he loves raising such a large brood because
he deals with something different every day.
He said: "I have this fantasy of my older
days, painting or sculpting or making
things. But right now, it's about getting
the work done and getting home to family. I
have an adventure every morning getting up."
Brad also revealed his favorite movie role
was in 2005's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," because
it was when he met Angelina.

WYCLEF JEAN'S HOUSE FORECLOSED
Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean's Miami Beach
mansion has gone into foreclosure and is set
to be auctioned off December 12. Wyclef, a
former member of hip-hop trio the Fugees,
and several partners took out a $2 million
mortgage in 2004 to purchase the property,
which he then renovated. But he never paid
off the more than $177,000 in construction
costs he owed and left the home unfinished
for over two years. He and the other
mortgage holders now owe the bank $2.4
million.
The as-yet-unfinished mansion is going to be
sold off by Miami-Dade County Dec. 12
because Wy -- through a company he set up
with friends -- has yet to pay back over $2
million he owes on the mortgage. The house
went into FC City in March.
And it wasn't just the mortgage that wasn't
paid -- court documents show there were
plenty of people working on the house that
haven't gotten paid either.

INI EDO WEDS AT
LAST
Posted on sunday Nov.30,2008
One of Nollywood's sexiest female actresses,
Ini Edo finally married her soulmate Philip
Ehiagwina Saturday 29th
November 2008,in oil- rich town of Eket,Akwa
Ibom state, Nigeria. The wedding ceremony
was very flamboyant and
glamorous with various stars from nollywood
present.
Although Ini had tried to keep the
relationship and marriage plans under wraps,
the news filtered easily to the public.
Though many critics thought the news was a
publicity stunt of some sorts, since her
wedding dates have been announced and
re-announced on several tabloids times
without number this year.
The event lasted till yesterday night. The
traditional wedding was a major blow to
critics of the star actress who thought that
her relationship with Phillip, the United
States -based dude would not lead to
wedding. Ini further fuelled this some
months back when she denied any plan for
marriage. But the star actress finally tied
the knot.
The relationship that has suffered several
controversies in the last two years was
finally sealed this month. Equally her
husband, Philip, was involved in a
controversy with actors- Jim Iyke and Emeka
Ike- over who was sleeping with his ex wife,
Ruth. But he seems not interested in the case
anymore since they have parted ways long ago
and he has
finally married his soulmate.Happy Married

WHITNEY AND
BOBBY BACK AGAIN
Posted Friday
Nov. 28, 2008
Whitney Houston and ex-husband Bobby Brown
are reportedly getting back together. The
former couple - who married in 1992 and
divorced in 2007 - are said to have
rekindled their romance after being
encouraged to remarry by their 15-year-old
daughter Bobbi Kristina.A report says that
Whitney, 45, and Bobby, 39, were "looking
very romantic while dining together in
Georgia recently."
However, a representative for the singer
insists: "They are just good friends whose
primary interest is the wellbeing of their
daughter." Earlier this year, Bobby revealed
he believes his marriage to Whitney - who
has battled an addiction to crack-cocaine -
was destined to fail from the start.
He said: "I think it was doomed from the
very beginning. Within the first year we
separated, with several more to follow. I
think we got married for all the wrong
reasons," adding that ,"Now, I realize
Whitney had a different agenda than I did
when we got married. I believe her agenda
was to clean up her image, while mine was to
be loved and have children."
"Whitney was under a lot of pressure. The
media was accusing her of having a bisexual
relationship with her assistant, Robin
Crawford. In Whitney's situation, the only
solution was to get married and have kids.
That would kill all speculation, whether it
was true or not."

Nigerians sweep
MTV Africa awards
By Tomi Oladipo
Abuja BBC NEWS sunday Nov .23, 2008
Wahu was emotional as she
collected her prize for best
female |
Nigerian artists dominated the
MTV Africa Music Awards (the Mamas) on their own
turf in the capital city Abuja, scooping six of
the 10 awards.
D'banj won both the artist of the year award
and the best male award, crowning a successful
year for the self-proclaimed "entertainer".
Fellow Nigerian rapper Naeto C won best new
act, while 9ice won the best Hip-hop award.
Kenyan singer Wahu, who was overcome with
emotion, was named best female.
She tearfully dedicated the award to her
husband, fellow musician Nameless, and to her
daughter who, she said, "is to young to understand
how much she inspires me".
Fusion BBC 1Xtra's Trevor Nelson
hosted the show in front of a crowd of 5,000 fans
in the stylishly shaped Abuja Velodrome.
The Game performed at the
ceremony |
Nigerian duo P-Square, who had five
nominations, only managed to take home one prize
for best group.
Despite not winning, the disappointed twin
brothers thrilled the crowd with their stage act.
South Africa hip-hoppers Jozi won the award for
the best live performers.
However, Ghanaian artist Samini revealed he was
not happy the live award had gone to a "group that
plays CDs and mimes".
He added: "If you say 'live' then the music has
to be with a band.
"I'm not picking names but I think that the
best live performer should go to a live band
artist.
"I'm sorry if I'm being harsh here but I'm
trying to be straightforward. If I watch you on TV
and I see you with a live band, then you better do
it on stage for me."
There was a cameo appearance by US rapper The
Game, who gave a brief medley of his hit songs.
There were also performances by the rapper's
compatriots Flo-rida, and Kelly Rowland.
Other live acts included Seun Kuti, 9ice, as
well as HHP from South Africa, but it was the
assortment collaborations that stole the show.
HHP came back on stage to join Nigerian singing
sensation Asa on her song Jailer, and Rowland
performed alongside D'banj.
But the biggest fusion was that of South
African rockers Cassette, Kenyan rapper Jua Cali,
and Ikechukwu and Naeto C.
American R&B singer Alicia Keys gave a
video acceptance speech for winning the best
R&B award, as did South African band Seether,
who won the best alternative award.
Mama Africa
The legend gong went to the late Fela Kuti, the
Nigerian pioneer of Afrobeat. The award was
received by the star's children, Yemi and Seun.
Kelly and Nigerian artist D'banj
performed
together |
Speaking of Kuti, Nelson said: "He was the
first man I ever heard, all the way from the UK,
when I heard African music for the first time it
came from this man.
"There could only be one person, only one
recipient."
Kuti's children joked in their acceptance
speech that they would "not take this award to him
yet".
"We'll keep it in our house, and when the times
comes then we'll take it to him."
Out of the 11 awards given out on the night the
legend award was the only one that was not chosen
by the fans.
Winners were selected by fans sending text
messages.
There was also a tribute to "Mama Africa"
Miriam Makeba, the South African singer who died
just over a week ago.
Winners each received a Golden Microphone
trophy, which has a futuristic microphone emerging
from a globe of the world, with the African
continent symbolically placed at the top of the
world.
Even though this was an African event there
were some non-African artists nominated in
different categories, including Lil Wayne, The
Game, Coldplay, and Keys.
African music videos were also recognized, with
Nigeria's Ikechuku winning the award for the best
video for his song Wind am well.
