Lagos city was today ranked average in environmental performance
and governance policies in the Africa Green City Index survey
report conducted and released by Siemens at
the on-going climate change summit taking place in Durban
, South Africa.
The Africa Green City Index is an environmental safety analysis
conducted by Siemens in 15 major cities in 11 African countries
with two which are, Dar es Salaam and Maputo performing well
below average and Luanda and Nairobi performed below average
while Lagos, Addis Ababa, Alexandria, Cairo and Pretoria
performed average.
The cities that performed well by
ranking above arrange are , Accra, Cape Town ,Casablanca
,Durban ,Johannesburg and Tunis.
The Africa Green City Index was a survey conducted to
examine the environmental performance of African cities
in eight categories which are in areas of energy and Carbon
emission , land use, transport, water, Sanitation, air quality
and environmental governance .
The survey was to ascertain Africa countries that are
consciously working to ensure safe environment for her citizens
in conformity with the climate change agenda.
One of the factors that
made Lagos to
score very low was the emissions from power generators
due to poor electricity power generation and that policy
implementation of environmental laws are not decentralized to
ensure effectiveness .
The study also revealed that there is a strong correlation
between a city's environmental performance and the percentage of
residents living in formal settlements. It argued that the fewer
residents are living in a city formally the better the city
performs well in
adherence to
environmental laws. However , the continent is facing faster
urbanization and as a
result it is suffering from unplanned urban sprawl that has
contributed to the
poor environmental situations in African cities.
