The Councillors Forum in Edo State has
commended the State Governor, Comrade
Adams Oshiomhole
for allowing them to complete their tenure
just as they asked for the payment of their
full entitlements.
Rising from a meeting in
Benin City
at the weekend, the
Councilors
Forum in a communiqué signed by Hon.
Ehidiamen Andrew young, Chairman, and Hon.
Steve Okougbo, Secretary, maintained that
based on the dissolution of the councils,
the full payment of their entitlements which
includes payment of severance gratituties to
all councilors should be paid.
“The governor has taken advantage of the
local government
council law to dissolve the
councils, therefore let us also exploit the
law as it favours us because we are
qualified for severance benefits after
spending two years”, they added
According to the
Councillors
from the eighteen
local government
councils, they are not happy
with the Association of
Local Government of
Nigeria (ALGON) for going
ahead with negotiations without carrying
them along.
They are therefore demanding for the full
payment of their three months salaries,
spanning October to December 2010 and that
the legislative grants of three months
should be paid without delay.
“The Councils that have not paid leave
transport grants to councilors in their
respective councils should do so without
delay”, they added.
The Councilors Forum appreciated the prompt
attendance of the meeting scheduled less
than twenty four hours, and noted that they
will adopt consultation, consolidation and
if necessary confrontation to get their
entitlements.
According to them, “ALGON has gone ahead for
negotiation without carrying the councilors
along since the dissolution of the councils,
that is why we are appealing to the Comrade
Governor to prevail on the Local Government
Councils to give us our entitlements”.
The Councillors noted that the issue of
severance benefits should not be restricted
to members of a particular political party
rather the interest of all the councillors
elected in 2007 should be taken into
consideration.
