Abuja hosts the world on human rights,criminal justice and
prisoner reforms

The 5th World Conference on Human Rights, Criminal Justice and
Prison Reforms began Monday 21 February in Abuja. The
international conference, being hosted by CURE (Citizens United
for the Rehabilitation of Errants) – NIGERIA started with the
arrival and registration of participants at the Pope John Paul
Centre and a dinner at which delegates got to meet and discuss a
Summary of the “Ways Forward.”
A 45-minute, pre-event Meet the Press session took place for
selected an invited journalists and photo-journalists, from both
print and electronic media, before
the Opening Ceremony
proper, at which Chairman, Board of Trustees of the hosting
organization, CURE-NIGERIA, Solomon Adun Asemota, SAN, presented
a welcome adder
Special Guest of Honour at the opening was President Goodluck
Ebele Jonathan, GCFR (represented) while the Chairman of the
occasion was Hon. Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, GCON, former
Chief Justice of Nigeria.
One of the many local and international Resources Persons lined
up for the conference is Professor of Criminology and Sociology
of Law, Etannibi Alemika of the University of Jos, who presented
the Keynote Address entitled Human Rights are Prisoners’
Rights,” in which he argued that “all of are criminals, the
difference being only in the frequency of criminal activity,
such that crime is one’s hobby or the other’s occupation!”
The event is being co-sponsored by the Federal Ministry of
Justice, Nigeria, the Jane Adams College of Social Work
(University of Illinois, USA) the Federal Inland Revenue
Service, Nigeria and Open Society Justice Initiative, New York,
USA. It is also supported by the Nigeria Prison Service, US
Senator James Inhofe, Prison Rehabilitation and Welfare Action,
the North-West Africa Province of the Society of Jesus and the
Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.
