The Governor of Ogun State, Otunba
Gbenga Daniel, has asked Nigerians to
count their blessings, recommit
themselves to national development, set
new goals and work to actualize the
immense potentials of the nation.
Governor Daniel stated this in a message
released in Abeokuta to mark the
country’s Golden Jubilee. The Governor
said in spite of the failures of the
past and the challenges of the Present,
Nigeria remains one indivisible nation
with promising prospects. He remarked
that the fact that democracy has endured
for 11 unbroken years was another sign
of progress and a reason to celebrate
fifty years of Nationhood and thank God
for his mercies.
“We should now come together to fashion
ways to translate the prospects into
concrete reality for the benefit of our
people. We must use the opportunity of
this anniversary to ponder over the past
fifty years, do a sincere introspection
of our polity as it concerns unfulfilled
aspirations, shattered dreams, failed
hopes, disappointments and endless
expectations among other innumerable
shortcomings.
With this we can chart a better course
for ourselves as a people and for the
progress of our joint commonwealth.
Nigerian is still work in progress and
our destination is a united nation where
every Nigerian is able to attain full
potentials irrespective of religion,
creed, political leaning and ethnic
orientation,” the Governor said in the
statement.
The Governor saluted the giant
roles of people of Ogun State extraction
saying their sterling contributions to
the making of the Nigerian nation would
continue to be celebrated. He singled
out Basorun Moshood Kashmawo Abiola for
his
contributions to the entrenchment of
democracy and for laying down his life
for the nation. The Governor however
warned the people of the State not to
trade away its future on the altar of
selfish political and personal
aggrandizement remarking that Ogun under
his watch has been transformed
positively in all sectors
Governor Daniel also asked Nigerians to
spare a thought for past heroes who
worked assiduously to make Nigeria what
it is today saying we should all
contribute to the development of the
nation through words and deeds. He said
this can be demonstrated by ensuring
that the next general elections were
conducted in a peaceful ambience thereby
further deepening democracy and
providing a solid platform for the
development of the nation. The Governor
congratulated President Goodluck
Jonathan and the generality of Nigerians
for witnessing the unique milestone in
the nation’s history.
