Now ,it’s official
; the Independent National Electoral
Commission ,INEC has fixed Thursday 6th
January 2011 for the rerun of the Delta
state gubernatorial election . This was
announced today after the top echelon of
INEC held a meeting .
Mr Solomon Soyebi, the INEC Commissioner in
charge of information who made the
announcement today
said
the arrangement falls within the time-frame
given by the Court of Appeal in Benin which
ordered the re-run. “We have decided to
conduct the election on January 6….As you
are aware, the chairman, Professor Jega has
always emphasized the commission’s
commitment to the tenets and letters of our
laws.”
Professor Attahiru Jega, the INEC chairman
had on Monday described the Delta re-run as
a security challenge. “The Commission has to
conduct the re-run Governorship election in
DeltaState, which on its own poses a huge
security challenge,” Jega said on Monday.
Newsdiaryonline learnt that the issues of
security and logistics were top among the
major subjects deliberated extensively upon
before a final date was announced today.
Sacked former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan is
seeking to return but there are strong
challengers like Omo Agege and Great Ogboru
who seem determined to snatch the guber seat
from Uduaghan who is a cousin to former
Governor James Ibori
