The Turaki Youth Vanguard, a support group
for the presidential ambition of former Vice
President Atiku Abubakar, has warned
Northern leaders against the temptation of
entering into any deal with President
Goodluck Jonathan on the need for him to do
only one term if elected in 2011.
Reacting to a statement credited to the
Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Alhaji
Mukhtari Shagari, that the President has
pledged to serve only one term, the Turaki
Youth Vanguard said it is the height of
naivety for any Northern leader to believe
that the President will honour his words if
he (Jonathan) ever accepted such terms in
return for Northern support in 2011.
According to the Youth Support group, no one
should believe a President who brazenly
declared that zoning doesn’t exist, despite
being a major beneficiary of the power
sharing arrangement, intended to eliminate
the fears of domination and marginalization
by one section of the country over another.
The Youth Vanguard wondered if a President
that unilaterally repudiated an honourable
agreement for the unity and stability of
Nigeria for the sake of his desperate
ambition should now be trusted by
Northerners if he ever promised to serve
only one term in 2011.It warned Northern
politicians like Mukhtari Shagari not to be
carried away by the sugar-coated assurances
of a President who sacrifices honour for
pure ambition, even if it leaves Nigerians
bitterly divided.
On Shagari’s advice that the North should
bother more about development rather than
political power, the Vanguard asked the
Sokoto State Deputy Governor to explain what
development he brought to the North through
the billions he received as allocation as
the former Minister of Water Resources.
The Turaki Youth Vanguard said it was not
surprised that Deputy Governor Shagari was
championing this simplistic cause knowing
how he had enthusiastically supported every
government in power.“We are also aware of
his inglorious role in promoting the evil
Third Term agenda,” the statement added.
