On 7/6/2010 the above mentioned officer
was arrested by the Abia State Command
for an undisclosed offence. Search was
conducted in his hotel room, village
home, Awka home as well as Ever Royal
Suites and nothing incriminating was
found. He was later taken to Abuja to
see the I.G. Police, Mr.Ogbonnaya Onovo
who accused him of not proceeding on his
transfer to Sokoto and even questioned
him on how he was transferred from
Bauchi to Umuahia. He further went on to
tell him that he has been hearing his
name for a very long time and that the
earlier he gets him out of the system
the better. He further stated that Evans
has shot himself on the leg because of a
petition written against him by one Mr.
Isaac Nwosu who hails from the same town
with Evans.
In the petition it was stated or alleged
that Evans was behind the kidnapping of
his younger cousin, Mr. Kingsley Osualla
in February last year and subsequently
killed him on May 2nd 2010.
He also alleged that Evans kidnapped the
former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris
Ngige and that Evans owns a hotel where
he trains and harbours kidnappers and
that as far as he is concerned, Evans is
responsible for all the kidnappings in
the South-East. All these allegations
sounded very strange to Evans who
thought it was some kind of joke. In his
defence, Evans told his own side of the
story viz:- On February 6, 2009 Evans
got a phone call while at Umuahia that
his cousin Chief Kingsley Osualla had
been kidnapped. He after the shock, made
telephone calls to some of his friends
intimating them of what had happened to
him. He specifically summoned Prophet
and Igwe Mbanabu to proceed to Enugu
immediately to the house of Kingsley so
that if the kidnappers called Kingsley’s
wife, they should know what they wanted.
Eventually they called and demanded for
N50 million ransom and that it was not
an ordinary kidnap but a business one.
They were prevailed on to temper justice
with mercy but all to no avail. They
later came down to N10m. Some of
Kingsley’s friends gathered N1.1m to
give the kidnappers but Evans advised
them not to yet until he got the facts
he needed. The petitioner defied this
instruction and went and dropped the
money to the annoyance of Evans and
those he sent. Despite the money
allegedly dropped, Kingsley was still
not released. There was confusion
everywhere because the kidnappers denied
receiving any money. When Kingsley’s
phone was called they started torturing
him. They put the phone on speaker so
that the callers could hear his cries.
This action necessitated Kingsley’s
uncle, Chief Isaiah Azubuike to raise
another N1.6m to add to the one already
dropped. Prophet and Igwe had gotten
annoyed over the dropping of the first
money and still Kingsley was not
released and so they felt insulted that
nobody was appreciating their efforts.
This made Hippolytus Ohia, a cousin to
Kingsley and his business partner go to
Enugu and as Evans was told later
collected the money from whoever and
went and dropped it at an unknown
destination but Kingsley was still not
released. Later, Kingsley was rescued by
Enugu police command and three of the
kidnappers were arrested. They never
mentioned Evans, nor any of the people
mentioned above.
More than a year after, 2nd
May specifically Kingsley was gruesomely
murdered in his village, Akanu-Umuobom
in Ideato South L.G.A of Imo State. Some
suspects were arrested and it was Evans
after interrogation who handed them over
to SARS Owerri for investigation. During
the course of arresting the suspects and
every other event that occurred, the
petitioner Mr. Isaac Nwosu was nowhere
to be seen. Evans asked of his
whereabouts but nobody knew. Evans then
called the deceased’s wife and advised
her to be very careful because of
Isaac’s movement. The deceased was last
seen with Isaac Nwosu and it was because
of ritual murder that Isaac had that he
prevailed on Kingsley not to travel back
to Enugu after the traditional wedding
of their cousin, Mrs. Blessing Azubuike
and Evans mother’s thanksgiving service
the next day. In a sudden twist of
events, Evans became a suspect overnight
because Isaac Nwosu became afraid that
Evans would come for him having been
convinced that he caused his brother’s
death. As a sort of defence mechanism he
ganged up with Evans’s enemies who have
been looking for an opportunity to nail
him because he has shone as Onwa for so
long that everything in the town is
revolved around him and petitioned the
I.G.P with all sorts of trumped up
unsubstantiable allegations against him.
As God would have it, the murderer of
Kingsley, one Mr. Paul Uzoagba alias
Onyenawauya was arrested at Abakaliki.
He confessed that they were going for a
robbery operation at Akokwa when they
saw the deceased in the village market
at about 7p.m. They tailed him to his
house and in a desperate attempt to
snatch his car, a struggle ensued and in
the process, they shot him, put him in
his vehicle and drove off. They later
abandoned the car in front of Evans’s
gate with the deceased’s body inside
when they found out that escaping with
the car was difficult and escaped with
their motorcycles. While the robbers
were attacking Kingsley, his mobile
police escort quietly escaped with his
AK 47 rifle with 60 rounds of
ammunition.
Evans has since been in detention for no
just cause. Up till now, nobody has come
out to say Evans sponsors him as a
kidnapper, or was kidnapped by Evans or
is being trained by Evans. All the
petitioner and his co-evil plotters did
was to embark on a campaign of calumny
against Evans by sponsoring false
newspaper publications. It is on record
that while Evans was D.P.O Osisioma for
just three weeks, there was no single
incident or crime recorded. Because of
his enviable record, the Police
Commissioner had to withdraw him to
state headquarters to head his
Intelligence Unit. This office he held
tenaciously and efficiently until his
arrest and detention. Up till this
moment, the police authorities have not
even invited the petitioner and Evans to
a face to face interview so that he can
explain where he got his facts. What the
petitioner is after is any day Evans is
released he will run away from this
country.
