Ekiti:Unease over alleged manhunt for AC leaders
By Ayokunle Oloye        newsdiaryonline.com           Wed April 22, 2009

Ahead of the Saturday's governorship rerun in Ekiti state, reports indicate  that   Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders have embarked on a manhunt in order to arrest Action Congress leaders and their supporters in a desperate attempt to cretae panic and shut out AC supporters from voting in the Saturday poll. The PDP sources said has listed names of the AC leaders and has started molesting  and picking members of the AC in their efforts to deplete the opposition party’s camp.

These arrests were coming amidst claims that the PDP was allegedly luring  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with N2 billion to sway the agency to announce fake results in the Saturday rerun poll.No evidence was however provided to prove this  allegation.

It was gathered that the PDP embarked on the desperate arrest of the AC members to cover ground for their plans to rig the poll and destabilise the people. Already, the party and the security agents and hordes of thugs have visited Ise-Ekiti, Igbemo Ekiti and Ilawe, among other towns and communities, where the party plans to hound the AC supporters in detention.

For instance, PDP leaders and security agents have been on the trail of the leaders of AC, including Chief Lawrence Agunbiade from Ise-Ekiti and Mr. Felix Ajayi from Igbemo Ekiti, to have them clamped in detention ahead of Saturday poll. However, at Igbemo-Ekiti, residents mobilized to scuttle attempt to seize their leaders, while in other parts of the state, people are mobilizing to resist illegal arrest of their leaders.  Among other leaders slated for arrest include the State Chairman of AC, Chief JideAwe; Yemi Adaramodu, Hakeem Jamiu, Chief (Mrs) Funke Owoseni, Mr. Tope Alonge and Evangelist Adeola Alofe

AC`s Kayode Fayemi is quite popular and he is poised to take the reins of power in the state. But Segun Oni of PDP  whose  election was annuled by the courts appears determined to regain his seat by all means.PDP chieftains have reportedly been calling for deployment of soldiers for the polls. This call has led to some furious protests from the opposition which believes the PDP may in fact be plotting to rig.In another development, some pundits see the Ekiti polls as another test of the political strength and relevance of  Ahmed Bola Tinubu,as the bellwether of AC politics in the  South West.
