Canada, April 26, 2009 - As millions of the Nigerian
Diaspora watched keenly the unfolding of events in
the ‘fountain of knowledge’ state, Ekiti, it has
become evident that the culture of democracy has yet
to be entrenched in the structure and function of
our motherland.
In the past 48 hours, all reports conveyed concrete
evidence that some disgruntled politicians who wish
to be addressed as state leaders have yet to shun
their evil ways of “business as usual.” Also, their
actions have shown that they are unwilling to
embrace civility and integrity as true states-men.
The good news however, is that progressive minded
citizens have shown resilience and bravery in
defending their future.
Over the years, majority of Nigerians have seen
their lives turned upside down by unpatriotic and
undeserving leaders as a result of their quest for
power and richness to the disadvantage of the
people. In an average household, the menace of
poverty is deeply rooted, socio-economic and
political inequality gets wider every day, and the
overall standard of living of the world 8th exporter
of crude oil population is degenerating rapidly.
Unfortunately for Nigerians, our politicians want us
to see them as doing us favours by being the ruling
class.
Throughout history, we have seen our founding
leaders fought spiritedly for independence and the
masses stood up to resist military dictatorship.
This present “democratic “era (from 1999) represents
another phase in our struggle towards a prosperous
country where governance is people centered. This
emancipation must not stop, be defeated or retreated
to the oppression and humiliation suffered in the
hands of false “leadership”.
Patriotic Nigerians abroad urge the nation to rise
up and not give up on their cause for a better
Nigeria, especially during this critical moment in
history. We have come a long way in this struggle
and must not give in to selfish politicians and the
images they have camouflaged. A free and fair
election in Ekiti state will signal a new wave of
social-political order in Nigeria. Failure to see
political justice in effect in Ekiti means our
beloved country and its people are bound to remain
enslaved, oppressed and deceived for more decades to
come. But this we cannot allow and must resist.
Nigerians abroad commends the commitment of the
people of Ekiti to defend democracy and their votes.
Our future is in our collective hands. Nigerians
must stand up for socio-economic and political
justice.
Rise up Nigerians!
Signed
