Chief Anthony Enahoro is dead. One of his
children confirmed to news men that he died
in the early hours of today.Enahoro a
foremost nationalist and pro democracy
activist died after a protracted illness. In
fact, there had been some virtual death watch
for some weeks now following earlier reports
of his worsening health and fears that he
might have died.Such fears were however
allayed until the cold hands of death
finally caught up with him.He will be
greatly remembered,aside for his struggle
for independence but also for his heroics as
a champion of NADECO in the struggle against
military tyranny.Among the early reactions
to Enahoro’s death was a statement by Ogun
State Governor Gbenga Daniel.
The Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga
Daniel, has described the death of Pa Anthony
Enahoro as a major loss to the country at a
critical juncture in the nation's history.
Governor Daniel said with his death the
country has lost the last of the titans who
fought for independence and a better
society.
"Pa Enahoro was a shining example of
patriotism, selflessness and fairness. He
represented the special breed of Nigerians
who put the interests of the nation above
primordial and base considerations in
actions, words and deeds. We recall with
pride his role in the agitation to free
Nigeria from the clutches of colonialism and
his relentless and dogged fight for a better
society. Pa Enahoro also played a major role
in ensuring that the nation returned to
democracy in 1999 through his activities in
the National Democratic Coalition.
Despite brushes with the law and unjustified
incarceration Pa Enahoro remained a
committed champion of good governance and
equitable society. A scourge of the
military and virulent opponent of bad
governance Pa Enahoro gave his
all to Nigeria and never relented until the
very end. The only honour we can do
his memory is to ensure that we make this
democracy work , make good governance the
hallmark of all tiers of government and
contribute our quota to the development of
Nigeria and the sustenance of democracy. We
all must emulate the fine qualities of our
departed elder statesman and one of the
makers of modern Nigeria that is the only
way to ensure that the labours of our heroes
like Pa Enahoro are not in vain", the
governor said in a statement issued in
Abeokuta shortly after the news of the death
was broken.
Governor Daniel said ,Nigerians should not
mourn but celebrate the life of a man who
added so much value to his community, state,
Nation and humanity in general. The Ogun
State Governor also prayed that God
would give the family , associates,
followers and the entire nation the
fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
