Some
ex-militants from the Niger Delta tried
to enter the city at around 4 am on
Wednesday to complain about their
treatment under the Amnesty agreement.
However, they were prevented entry into
the city by the Nigerian Army.
In retaliation, the militants blockaded
the Gwagwalada Road, preventing all
entry from the Southern part of the
country into the city. The blockade was
dislodged at about 12 noon.
Reports say that most of the militants
have returned to their places of origin,
however, some who remained behind have
been granted a meeting with the Minister
of the Niger Delta.
However, traffic remains heavy along the
Gwagwalada road and the Nigerian Army
remains on high alert throughout the
city.
The second stage of the amnesty
programme started last week as the first
batch of ex-militants were transported
to a camp in Obubra, Cross Rivers State
where they are being trained in various
skills.
The special assistant to the president
on Niger Delta, Timi Alaibe told the
militants that they will also be
provided with scholarships to
universities after their orientation
programme.
