Vote leaders who will fight corruption-TUC officials

JOINT PRESS RELEASE              Newsdiaryonline     Mon Nov 1,2010

A JOINT PRES STATEMENT ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 3-DAY WORKING VISIT OF COMRADE ALIYU A. MUSA ,CHAIRMAN TRADE UNION CONGRESS OF NIGERIA (TUC) FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY ABUJA COUNCIL TO THE TRADE UNION CONGRESS OF NIGERIA (TUC) RIVERS STATE COUNCIL

The Chairman Federal Capital Territory Abuja Council of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Comrade Aliyu A. Musa as part of the TUC’s State Councils Peer Review Exercise and collaboration to enable TUC State Council’s share experiences and best practices in Trade Union Administration and Industrial Relations paid a 3-day working visit to the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Rivers State Council on Wednesday 27 October 2010. After the visit, both TUC State Council Chairmen resolved as follows:

  1. That the peer review exercise by TUC State Councils is very commendable and instructive and should be encouraged and even extended to the TUC Affiliates as it allows the participating State Councils share experiences on  how real issues were handled and resolved.

  1. That the 2011 Elections will be a key deciding factor as to whether the next 50 years will bring hope and succour to Nigerians. Accordingly all Nigerians that are 18 years and above should as a matter of utmost importance ensure that they are registered in the forthcoming voters registration exercise. They should also ensure that they vote for candidates of their choice based on their conscience, antecedents of the candidates, and manifesto. Most importantly, they should ensure that they vote out corrupt leaders/candidates and ensure that they vote for leaders/candidates who can win the war against corruption. Such leaders/candidates will usually have impeccable records and the will power to prosecute the fight against corruption. Such leaders/candidates will not surround themselves with corrupt lieutenants. This is based on our believe that except corruption is eliminated or drastically reduced in Nigeria ,all efforts at and hopes of a better and great Nigeria will be dashed.

  1. That candidates seeking political offices, their supporters and politicians generally , should ensure that they play by the rules.

  1. That  ALL the security agencies must prepare adequately to ensure that the 2011 elections are not marred by violence and that Nigerians are not discouraged from participating in the 2011 elections either as voters or candidates because of insecurity.

  1. Both State Councils commend the Rivers State Government for the peace that is now in Rivers State and for the progress made so far in development of infrastructure

  1. Both State Councils appeal to the various employers of labour and Governments at all levels in Nigeria to close-ranks with their labour leaders and workers representatives to ensure that the 2011 elections are not marred by strikes. They should focus on building and maintaining mutual trust and salubrious relationship as well engage the unions early enough in all issues that may likely affect the workers. The Union Leaders should also engage their members early enough to obtain their mandate, buy-in and understanding. Above all, patriotism is expected from  all parties especially as we approach the 2011 elections.

Long Live Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC);   Long Live The Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Solidarity Forever,

Comrade Chika Onuegbu JP, FCA                                Comrade Aliyu A. Musa MCIPSN, MCIPS
