Jonathan's Groups Fight over cash for Voters' Card- By Chuks Ehirim Wed March 9,2011
The demand for production of voters' cards before they could be paid some money which they were promised almost resulted in fisticuf between some politicians who are of the Peoples Democratic Party[PDP] extraction and other political jobbers who posed as co-ordinators of the support groups working for the electoral success of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in next month's Presidential election
The rowdy scene was captured at the Press centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists[NUJ], in Utako area of Abuja on Wednesday. The PDP men had told journalists that they were there to address a press conference but before anybody knew what was happening, a large group of unemployed youths and other political jobbers thronged the place, where they were made to wait for over five hours before those who invited them came.
On arrival, the leaders asked the co-ordinators to line up and write their names on a list. They were also asked to produce the list of their members, as well as evidence of the work they have done in support of President Jonathan.
But the last straw that broke the camel's back, this reporter was told, was the demand that they produce their voters cards before they were be entitled to any form of payment. This demand is said to have upset the co-ordinators, many of who refused to write their names.
Some of them complained to journalists that that was not the first time they would be asked to write their names but that in each occasion nothing is given to them.At this point the event almost turned riotious, forcing the journalists to ask them to leave their premises.
A similar incident was said to have occured at the Legacy House, campaign headquarters of President Jonathan on Tuesday when people gathered in the name of civil society groups, to collect money meant for them. Sources alleged that as much as N100,000 was handed over to each of the groups, for their support for the President.
