The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has risen from a series of meetings and resolved to urge President Goodluck Jonathan not to sign the recent amendments to the Electoral Act  into law.They described the actions by the members of the House of Representatives as `legislative rascality’.The governors are agitated that the new law will undermine their hold on power and equally threaten Nigeria’s democracy.

Aleady,the governors who have become an influential part of the political process  have urged the senators not  effect the same kind of obnoxious amendments to the act.Equally, the governors hinted that they will take appropriate legal action in the light of recent developments.They concluded in  their communique  by urging President Jonathan to  dump the amendment  bill if  the upper legislative chambers goes ahead to toe the line of the House of Reps. ``In the unlikely event that the two Chambers go ahead to pass this bill, we hereby call on the President not to assent,"the governors said.

The Forum also deliberated on the contentious issue of its leadership  and after adopting the report of the  Babatunde Fashola Committee,  it approved the appointment of  Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state as the new Vice Chairman.This is in line with the  new recommendation that there shall be a chairman and a vice chairman for the group.

They also condoled with Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State who lost his wife, Clara last week.

Read the  details of the Forum’s communiqué below:

"We, the Executive Governors of the 36 States of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, at our meeting held today, Monday December, 13, 2010 at the Kwara State Governor’s Lodge under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum deliberated over a number of issues and resolved as follows:

To receive the Report of Governor Fashola Committee on NGF Leadership which was presented by a member of the Committee, the Governor of Niger State, Chief Servant (Dr.) Aliyu Babangida, and after careful deliberation resolved to adopt the Report with the following amendments:

"That moving forward, there shall be offices of Chairman and Vice Chairman;

"The tenure of Chairman shall be for a period of 2 years;

"On this matter, the forum finally resolved to appoint the Governor of Anambra State, Governor Peter Obi, as the Vice Chairman of the Forum with immediate effect.

“Members condoled with their colleague, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on the untimely death of his dear wife, Mrs. Clara Oshiomhole and resolved to send an official delegation of the Forum led by the Chairman to the burial.

“The NGF has noted with great concern that in spite of the outcry of majority of Nigerians against the amendment of the Electoral Act, 2010, members of the House of Representatives still went ahead to pass it. We condemn this legislative rascality by the House of Representative as undemocratic and self-serving and a danger to the entire democracy.

“We hereby call on the Senate to show maturity and not to toe this unconscionable line.’’

The National Assembly must restrict itself only to the request of INEC with regards to the dates of elections.

''We have decided to take appropriate legal action.

"In the unlikely event that the two Chambers go ahead to pass this bill, we hereby call on the President not to assent."
