To commemorate the golden jubilee of the
nation, the Governor of Ogun State,
Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has ordered the
release of fifteen prisoners and
commuted the death sentence of a murder
convict to life imprisonment. The
Prisoners who benefited from the
remission of sentences and have been
ordered to be released forthwith are
Olanrewaju Oladipupo, Emeka Meribe,
Kazeem Ramoni, Sunday Ogunlade, Ndewunu
Posu and Oke Segun who are all serving
three years and above with less than one
year to serve. In the second category
are Monsuru Solola, Jamiu Oloyede,
Lukumon Ayegbami, Yekini Afosi, Ehisoho
Egbefor, Olawale Adekoya, Oke Utuyorume,
Mumuni Olaoye and Adeniyi Ayinla who are
long term convicts and detainees who
have been in custody for more than ten
years with good records. In the last
category is Solomon Adekunle whose
death sentence was commuted to life
imprisonment.
Governor Daniel took into consideration
written reports of the cases and other
relevant information before the amnesty
was extended to the affected prisoners.
The Governor also took the decisions
after due consultation with the Advisory
Council on the Prerogative of Mercy
and in exercise of the power conferred
on him under subsection I section 212 of
the 1999 Constitution of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria.
The warrant for the release of the 15
prisoners and that which commutes the
death sentence passed on Solomon
Adekunle to life imprisonment have
been transmitted to the appropriate
prison authorities to enable them carry
out the amnesty in commemoration
of the country’s 50 years of nationhood.
