After denying the story of the
resignation of National Security
Adviser,NSA General Aliyu Gusau for
weeks,official sources have this weekend
confirmed that Gusau is exiting the
Goodluck Jonathan Presidency.Sources say
he may hand over on Monday after the
president accepted his resignation.
The story of Gusau’s return as the NSA
has remained a puzzle to many. Some
thought he should not have been made NSA
again .Perhaps those who felt so were
vindicated by the fact that the veteran
NSA has hardly hidden his presidential
ambition away from those close to him
and president Jonathan should have known
that.
In fact it has been variously claimed
that Gusau accepted to be NSA in the
hope that he could emerge as vice
president to Jonathan after the dust
over acting presidency might have
settled. He was appointed after the sack
of General Sarki Mukthar who was NSA
while the Umaru Musa Yar Adua health
crisis lasted . Mukthar was seen as the
pillar of support of the Turai YarAdu
cabal which palpably undermined
Jonathan.
Some official sources said Gusau was
brought in to clear the mess. And to
some degree he truly seemed to have
contributed to the stabilization of the
presidency. But not all insiders are
agreed on this as some claim that
intriguing security reports also emerged
under Gusau which would have made
Jonathan also panic.But Jonathan refused
to be daunted by some wild reports. He
believed anyone who tried to move
against him would face the wrath of the
people.Jonathan was not bothered by some
of the reports he was fed with and that
also compounded Gusau’s woes as this
president turned out to be one that
could not be manipulated through expert
security reports.
‘You see the problem is that most people
underrate Jonathan, but he has an idea of
what he should do’ an insider said. The
truth is that Gusau failed to have his
way on most occasions and some of his
intentions were well known by the
president who easily put him in check,
insider told newsdiaryonline.com.
He got a rude shock when Jonathan
failed to name him as the vice
president. He was reported to have beed
utterly disappointed after Namadi Sambo
was named as the vice president.Gusau
was said to have hoped to use the vice
presidency to check the perennial
presidential ambition of former
President Ibrahim B. Babangida.Though
they are associates, the outgoing NSA
and some of IBB boys believe the man who
annulled June 12,1993 Presidential
election won by MKO Abiola should give
way to Gusau or any other aspirant who
served IBB loyally all these years.
Perhaps having failed to have his way
and apparently utterly disappointed,
Gusau has teamed up with three other
presidential aspirants who are
determined to stop Jonathan at the PDP
primaries .A statement by IBB,Atiku
Abubakar, Bukola Saraki and Gusau’s
campaign organizations on Friday said
they have all agreed to present a single
candidate from the North to battle for
the PDP ticket.
What is puzzling is that this statement
was released while Gusau was still
widely known as the NSA.It is therefore
not surprising that confirmation of
Gusau’s offer to resign is being made
now albeit anonymously.Whatever
happens,it is self evident that Gusau is
leaving Jonathan’s government
unfulfilled.
