Friday June 19 climaxed the
activities marking this year’s
International Day of the African
Child…and it’s Youth (IDAY) in Nigeria.
With over 50 civil society organizations
(CSOs) and international development
partners (IDPs) participating at the
World bank Country Office, Nigeria.
A two-week long activities which took
place across many states in the country
involved IDAY partners and collaborators
such as Teachers Without Borders (TWB),
in a two-day Capital FM Radio Talk Show
on illiteracy level among youngsters and
adults in Nigeria. And a three-point
Motor Park Literacy campaign for all
ages within Abuja and its environs.
Other events include illiteracy level
assessment on youngsters across 15
states in Nigeria conducted by member
organization of IDAY, stakeholders forum
and Radio campaign in partnership with
the Civil Society Action on Education
for All (CSACEFA), Kaduna Chapter, and
another three hours ‘Education for Our
Youths Campaign’ among members across
the country on June 16, the day set
aside annually to
celebrate the Africa Child.
The World Bank event which is a
stakeholders meeting to round up this
year’s IDAY commemoration was witnessed
by key government functionaries and
partners such as the Country Director
and Representative of UNESCO in Nigeria,
the National Planning Commission (NPC),
the office the Special Adviser to the
president on Relations with CSOs and
Federation of Africa Women for Education
(FAWEN) among others. The June 19 event
also witnessed the signing of IDAY
Charter by new members, the official
unveiling of IDAY logo through the
launch of it’s T-Shirt and a one year
plan of action by members.
Earlier in May 2009 as part of
preparation for the IDAY events, Mr.
Jean-Jacques Schul, the International
Coordinator of IDAY was in Nigeria to
meet with policy makers, and CSOs
working on education, as a means to
drumming up the IDAY programmes in
Nigeria and Africa at large.
Mr. Schul arrived Nigeria from Belgium,
the international headquarters of IDAY
on a one-week programme of activities
involving meeting with Joseph Ngu of
UNESCO, Ms. Modupe Makinde of the
European Commission in Nigeria, a team
of officers from the National Planning,
led by Dr. Samson Ebimaro, Deputy
Director, International Cooperation,
Prince Chineme Eme-Ezeoke, Special
Adviser to the President on Relation
with CSOs and 47 select NGOs in a
capacity building workshop to acquaint
and equip
them about the workings of and adequate
advocacy on IDAY goals.
IDAY is a network of African and
European organizations, each of which is
committed to educational projects in
Africa. These organizations are united
to make the voice of African civil
society heard. The objective is creating
a lot of awareness to compel the
authorities to ensure that all children
of school age are able to
complete a full course of primary
education by the year 2015.
