The
Registrar Joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board, Professor Dibu
Ojerinde yesterday disclosed that only
527,000 candidates who took part at the
Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination (UTME) will be admitted by
various tertiary institutions out of 1.3
million candidates that sat for the
examination nationwide.
Professor Ojerinde who disclosed this at
the second combined technical committee
meeting on admissions to tertiary
institutions at Obafemi Awolowo
University Ile Ife said for the board
to be transparent and to achieve its
objective of increasing access to
tertiary institutions, all admissions
are to be processed fast and in
systematic manner so that more people
will be absorbed.
The registrar charged over 400 tertiary
institutions in the country to comply
with the laid down guidelines which
stipulates a sixty/forty (60:40)
science/arts ratio for universities and
seventy/thirty 70:30 technology/non
technology ratio for polytechnics.
He also reminded all federal
institutions that the ratio of forty
five / thirty five / twenty (45:35:20)
for merit, catchments and Educationally
Less Developed States ,ELDS should be in
full force.
The registrar equally pointed out that
the ratio of forty/forty/twenty
(40:40:20) for state owned
institutions must be implemented; while
the private institution should let the
board know the ratios being used by
them.
He said that the challenge being faced
currently by JAMB was delay in
submission of admission lists by the
management of tertiary institutions
Answering another question professor
Ojerinde said that admission in LAUTECH
was on course adding that the crisis in
the institution was over.
Professor Ojerinde however charged
candidates who are yet to get admission
not to lose hope as the admission would
continue till the end of October.
He
said that JAMB was planning to establish
examination centres in all the 774 local
government councils across the country.
Also in his remarks ,the chairman of the
board professor Sam Ukpabi, the Igwe Eze
Ekoli in Enugu State emphasized that the
board expects all admissions to be made
on the printout issued to them, while
the quota for each course, Post
Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination (P UTME) screening score
and criteria used in admitting the
candidates must be indicated on the
printout.
He
also reminded all admission officers
that all admissions will come to an end
by 31st of October, 2010.
Professor Ukpabi noted that the first
technical committee meeting was
unacceptable to the board saying any
delay in processing this years
admission will be have serious
consequences on the closing date for
submissions.
He
pointed out that at the past meeting in
Kaduna only 294 attended the meeting out
of 400 institutions, while 197 actually
made submissions.
Professor Ukpabi however charged all the
tertiary institution to carry out the
assignment in good faith.
