Nigeria’s Council of State on Tuesday unanimously approved the nomination of Professor Attahiru Jega as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. The Nomination is expected to be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation . Jega , a Professor of Political Science was the vice chancellor of the Bayero University Kano..

Jega’s nomination is certain to accept wide acceptance because he is a man of proven integrity and honour. His tenure as President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU stood him out as very highly incorruptible.

The Council of state meeting was well attended by former heads of state, President Goodluck Jonathan, state governors and others.

It is expected that Jega’s nomination and eventual confirmation  will restore credibility to INEC which suffered crisis of confidence under the leadership of former Chairman Maurice Iwu.
