Protesters defiantly trooped out as hundreds of people  took to the streets in Kaduna today demanding the immediate impeachment of President Goodluck Jonathan over the recent removal of subsidy on fuel.“Jonathan and Sambo are Boko Haram, “Jonathan Must Go,” Jonathan Has failed Us,” “Jonathan has brought Bad luck to Nigeria,” “Jonathan is a Wicked Leader,”said some of the placards they carried as they chanted anti-government slogans.

The protesters converged in front of Lugard Hall, seat of the Kaduna state House of Assembly which they renamed Freedom Square under the watchful eyes of the police. There was also a fresh dimension to the scenario as Christians among the protesters formed a ring around their Muslim counterparts during the early afternoon Muslim prayers, ostensibly to prevent the police from attacking the worshipers.

President of the Arewa Defence League, Malam Murtala Abubakar, said that they were prepared to overcome religious differences to ensure that the protest against fuel increase succeeds. According to him, “we know that the government would want to capitalize on our religious differences but we are determined to overcome this.

“As you can see, this group is made up of both Christians and Muslims. When we were observing our prayers, the Christian youths were there to provide us cover. With this, we believe that we are making some progress.”This unity between muslims and Christians  was first noticed in Kano yesterday.

Tajudeen Oladoja leader of the protesters under the aegis of the Occupy Nigeria Poject addressed the rally and asked Nigerians from across the country to join the crusade against removal of subsidy on fuel.

He said , “government’s argument is that if it does not stop funding fuel, the economy will crash and we will go down with it. But, are there no other places to reduce spending to save money”?

“Government cannot claim that our country is broke when President Good luck Jonathan continues to feed on N3 million naira worth of food everyday while Nigerians are looking for a single meal for the day.”

“David Mark earns N600 million annually, money which is enough to set up at least 100 schools in Benue State.

“President Jonathan and his friends will eat N1 billion naira worth of food in 2012, while fueling their cars for N1.7 billion naira, the money is enough to build at least 50 good health care centres in the South-South.”

“N200 million was budgeted to water the gardens of the President in 2011, a whopping amount enough to educate 200 in the university.”
