Ex GMD NNPC Shehu Ladan:the man who died  with ‘the secret’
By Danlami Nmodu  Newsdiaryonline Wed Oct 5,2011

Former  Group Managing Director NNPC Shehu Ladan died in the night yesterday  in Dubai.According to a source close to the family, he passed on  at about 9.00PM Nigerian time.It was further learnt that he died as a result of complications from his illness which had earlier seen him in and out of hospital in Egypt in the recent past.

But Ladan will  be remembered mostly for the controversial way he was sacked days after his appointment as GMD NNPC by President Goodluck Jonathan. He was appointed Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) managing director on April 6, but  replaced by Austin Oniwon, the firm’s executive director in charge of refineries and petrochemicals, presidential spokesman Ima Niboro said in an official statement.

No official reason was given for the sacking of Ladan, but the president ordered that a “comprehensive audit” of NNPC’s accounts be carried out by a world-class auditing firm..“The finance minister is to engage the services of a world-class auditing firm to carry out the audit,” it said.Ladan had in April replaced Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo, who was in office for just over a year.

The sacking of Ladan gave rise to speculations  about why he was axed.Initially many thought it was to allow him become deputy governor to Governor Patrick Yakowa of  Kaduna state ,but that turned out to be untrue.Surpriingly Ladan himself just like government kept mute over his removal as no tangible information was revealed about his ouster.

Many also reasoned that there was a conflict of interest between the presidency and the ex GMD.Some even alleged that the closeness of Ladan to former NSA  General  Aliyu Gusau and ex President Ibrahim Babangida  who were  presidential aspirants seeking to snatch  the PDP ticket away from President Jonathan  might have been the reason  for his removal so as not to  empower  political rivals b y default.NNPC is  major cash cow in Nigeria .

But some insiders said he actually had a clash with Diezani Allison-Madueke the new minister who wanted things in a manner Ladan disagreed with.No further details were given about the reason for his dramatic and very unusual ack.Unfortunately, Ladan whom many had hoped would one day open up on his travails has died with the secret of his ordeal as GMD NNPC.
