‘Nigeria is too big to descend into chaos’-full text of Gov. Lamido’s   statement slamming OBJ           Newsdiaryonline   Fri June24,2011

Many Nigerians must have noted with apprehension recent statements from some very senior citizens of the country. In particular, the statement that the current leadership lacks the capacity to tackle corruption suggests a lack of circumspection that could further threaten an already fragile democracy and an inchoate national security of today.

Nigerians would certainly desire that their senior citizens exercise utmost restraint, irrespective of personal or regional pains behind their outbursts, particularly those of them whose creation the key operators of the present government are. A categorical statement such as under reference amounts to self-repudiation, an ill wind that would do no one any good on the long run.

No matter what, there are certain individuals in this country today who must rally round the leadership to strengthen capacity for confidence building and consensus among and across the various divides. Nigeria is too big to descend into chaos. The level of suffering will be the ultimate embarrassment for the Black race and we must all work to avoid such a situation. Senior citizens in particular must desist from being the weighty voices behind the advertisement of Nigeria’s failures in certain areas since the privileging of failures over and above areas of success could have such a demoralizing effect on every thing and everyone.

This is the context in which it is worth appealing to our leaders to exercise utmost restraint in what they say as what they say could have dire consequences for all of us before we all know it.

Sule Lamido is the Governor of Jigawa State. He issued this statement from Government House, Dutse, June 21st, 2011
