Newsdiaryonline Sun Oct 16,2011

President of the Senate, Senator David Mark has suggested a
review of the nation’s Education policy in order to bring the
sector to its old glorious status and achieve the goals of
National development. Senator Mark bemoaned the state of our
Education Sector and counseled “We must be prepared to take some
very radical and painful decisions to bring the sector to its
old glorious status and achieve meaningful development”.
Speaking at the 19th-23rd combined convocation ceremony of the
Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RUST) in
Port-Harcourt, Rivers State where he was conferred with an
Honorary Doctorate Degree; LLD Law at the weekend, Senator Mark
said urgent steps needed to be taken to rescue our Education
sector.
According to Mark, “For any nation to achieve greatness, she
must deliberately develop a focused and dynamic education
policy.
“It is doubly so for us who want to be among the 20 most
developed economies by 2020. Urgent steps, he added must be made
to redress the neglect, policy inconsistency or its poor
execution and inadequate funding.
Specifically, Mark urged the government to take a second look at
the role of the Ministry of Education with a view to reducing
its role to policy formulation and regulation while encouraging
states to run educational institutions.
A statement by Paul Mumeh ,his chief press secretary
quotes the senate
president saying, “I am passionate about education especially
Science and Technology because it provides impetus for
sustainable national development and growth.
“I am a firm believer that Education is the most profitable
investment we can make today and tomorrow. It is the greatest
legacy we can bequeath to our children” Incessant Industrial
actions in tertiary Institutions, he said unarguably retard
development, advising that a mechanism should be adopted between
academic unions and
management to reverse the trend.
Earlier, host Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State said he is
very passionate about quality of education and would continue to
provide the needed infrastructure and tools for the institution.
Amaechi therefore lifted the embargo on employment of
teaching and
non-teaching staff to the institution to meet their needs,
including accreditation of some courses.
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor
Beke Fakae said the institution has made giant strides in
Science and Technology disclosing that industrial machines can
now be manufactured in the school.
Professor Beke Fakae stated that Mark was honoured in
recognition of his extra-ordinary skill in managing men and
resources to deliver democracy dividends to the citizenry.
He added, “This skill as mirrored in his assiduity and deft
political moves that has brought stability to the otherwise
crisis-prone Senate known for high leadership turn-over in its
first 1999-2003. And stability as agreed is the key to orderly
development”
Elderstatesman and business mogul Chief O.B Lulu-Briggs was also
conferred with Degree of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Honoris Causa.
