At least 5 killed as car bomb  rocks  Abuja

At least 5 people were killed in car bomb explosions that rocked Abuja today.The explosions occurred on a day Nigerian officials are marking the 50th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence from Britain.The bombs went off at the Central Area.Some others were wounded and they have been taken to the Asokoro  and the Maitama General Hospital for medical attention.At least  three cars were involved in the explosions ath the Bayelsa House  for which MEND  has reportedly claimed responsibility.A senior police officer was among the casualties.

This is the first of such explosion by MEND in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory since the Niger Delta crisis started.

Channels Tv report claims that MEND   had earlier issued warning of a possible attack.Reports earlier said the South African home of Henry Okah, leader of MEND has been ransacked.But it is not clear if these explosions in Abuja are related to that incident

Niger Delta Militants have  agreed to an amnesty programme to end violence  right from the days of late President  Umaru Musa YarAdua whos who has since been succeeded by President Goodluck Jonathan, himself from Bayelsa state, in  the heart of the Niger Delta.
