TRAGEDY struck at the Olabisi Onabanjo University
Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, Ogun State, on
Sunday as Mrs. Ajoke Amuda Bello, the 32-year-old
mother of sextuplets, died in the early hours of the
day.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that Mrs. Bello died as a
result of excessive bleeding. She was said to have
given up the ghost at about 7.15 a.m. The deceased,
who was reported to have been in a stable condition,
was said to have developed complications, while
efforts to save her were futile.
The chairman of the board of the hospital, Professor
Femi Ajayi, confirmed the death to the Nigerian
Tribune, describing it as “unfortunate.”He said the
woman was transfused with blood by consultants when
it became necessary and had been monitoring her
since she was delivered of the babies.
A source at the hospital told the Nigerian Tribune
that problem started at about 1.00 a.m. when the
woman started bleeding heavily, as it was learnt
that four pints of blood were given to save
her.Professor Ajayi said the babies were in a stable
condition, saying that the death of their mother was
a devastating to the hospital. Two of the babies,
according to Professor Ajayi, were transferred to a
private hospital in Lagos for more medical attention
on Saturday and they were said to be at the
intensive care unit of the hospital.
“It was an unfortunate incident. The doctors and
nurses at the hospital put in their best to ensure
that the woman lived. “She was under close
monitoring as the medical team did not leave any
stone unturned to ensure that she was alive,” he
said. The state governor, Chief Gbenga Daniel, had
visited Mrs. Bello on her hospital bed on Saturday
and promised that the government would give
necessary assistance to the family.
