Prof Rukayat,minister of education
Graduates and students of
the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Enugu as well as
those seeking admission into the institution face uncertain
times as the National Board for Technology Education NBTE has
withdrawn accreditation
for all courses offered by the institution.
In addition ,the Board has requested
the
National Youth Service
Corps ,NYSC to put on hold the list of students mobilized for
NYSC by the institution until further notice.Equally the NBTE
has asked JAMB to stop
further admission into National Diploma programmes in the
institution.

The crackdown by the NBTE comes on the heels of findings
that the institution is engaged in activities that fall
below the minimum academic requirement for accreditation in such
institutions.
Dr. Masa’udu Adamu Kazaure ,Executive Secretary of the Board,
told newsmen in his office today IMT Enugu was found to
have over mobilized students for the NYSC scheme far above the
records submitted to the
Board, thus engaging in
sharp practices in terms of admission into the institution. He
added that records of
the enrolment and graduate output did not tally with each other.
According to the executive secretary, the institution was over
mobilizing students for the annual national youth service, a
development that led to complaints
from the National Youth
Service Corp (NYSC) to the Board which subsequently invited the
Rector of the Polytechnic to explain why. After investigation,
said Dr Kazaure,it was
decided that measures
should be taken to restore the minimum academic standard in the
institution.
According to him, “We received a letter dated June 9, 2011 of
complaint from the Directorate of NYSC of an unusual
presentation of a large number of graduates for NYSC
mobilization by Institute of Management and Technology (IMT),
Enugu since 2010. “Consequently upon this, a reply was sent to
NYSC on June 17, 2011 to put the mobilization on hold until the
Board conducts a proper investigation into the matter. The
Rector was also invited on the 20th of June, 2011 to explain the
discrepancies between the figures from NYSC and the student’s
enrolment/graduate out turn data submitted to NBTE. “On the 11th
of August, the Rector replied and commented on the observations
of NBTE. After examining the enrolment data and graduate out
turn submitted by thenInstitution since 2005 vis-à-vis the
approved carrying capacity of all accredited programmes of the
institution, the Board found considerable disparities with
submissions to the NYSC Directorate.
“It is on this note that the Board concluded that
(IMT) …for considerable
time has not been complying with the proscribed basic minimum
academic standard for accreditation for ND and HND programmes.
“Consequently, accreditation for all approved ND and HND
programmes offered by IMT, Enugu is hereby withdrawn until there
is evidence of compliance with approved standards. This decision
in line with the provisions of part 2, section 15 and 16 ofcap
E3, LFN 2004 (formerly decree 16 of 1985.
“The Directorate of NYSC has been written and advised to kindly
put on hold mobilization for all IMT, Enugu graduates for NYSC.
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is also
advised to stop admission into all ND programmes in the
institution.
“The action should serve as a deterrent to all the institutions
under the regulatory purview
of NBTE and who are in the habit of violating the basic
minimum academic standard as well as operating illegal outreach
and satellite campuses”.
The executive secretary said that all current students of the
institution will have to wait until the Board recertifies
the institution.In
addition he said, the Enugu state government has been informed
about the decision of the Board and should take whatever
disciplinary measure they deem fit against the management to
serve as a punishment for this monumental embarrassment.
