The Federal Government has described the role of the media in
the attainment of good governance in the country as pivotal.
Vice President Arc Mohammed Namadi Sambo, stated this Friday, in
Abuja, at the Award and Gala Night to mark the anniversary of
Nigerian Newsworld Magazine and Nigerian Pilot Newspaper,
published by D.O.M Communications.
Vice President Sambo said the media had “played prominent roles
in entrenching transparency in all facets of our national life
especially in the conduct of credible elections, rule of law,
stoppage of human rights abuses and all other negative vices
associated with bad governance.”
He used the occasion to task the media on proper and accurate
reporting, lamenting the abuse of professional conduct and
ethics of journalism by some sections of the media who engage in
sectionalism.
Speaking further, the VP implored the media to continue to
partner with government in her bid to improve the socio economic
status of Nigerians, saying “we believe that the only veritable
channel through which we can define and project the much needed
social contract is the mass media.

Vice President Sambo commended D.O.M Communications for adhering
to the ethics of Journalism by their demonstration of high
standards of reporting, observing that “this attitude forms the
bedrock of every standard journalism practice devoid of yellow
and unprofessional attitude.”
In his remarks the Chairman of the occasion and Chairman DAAR
Group, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, said the responsibility of
journalists is to help the society to grow and hold those in
power accountable to the governed.
Earlier the host of the event and Publisher of the papers, Mr.
Dennis Sami, stated that the occasion was to mark the ten years
anniversary of News World Magazine as well as one year
anniversary of Nigerian Pilot Newspaper. He also said that the
occasion was to recognise the achievements of some well
deserving Nigerians who had excelled in their fields of
endeavour.
Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of Life
Achievement Award to President Goodluck Jonathan. Others
honoured were the Minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Haliru
Mohammed, the Minister of State Education,Mr. Nyesom Wike, as
well as the Director General of National Tourism Development
Corporation, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe.
