The Acting Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, EFCC Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde has said there will
be no more sacred cows in the fight against economic crimes,
including corruption. He made the declaration on Friday,
December 9, 2011 at an event put together by the Inter Agency
Task Team as part of activities to mark this year
anti-corruption day which took place at the Shehu Yar ‘Adua
Centre, Abuja.
According to the new EFCC boss, “ the Commission shall brook no
more compromises no matter how veiled. Nigerians must develop
the culture of allowing the process of law to take its course.
The cancerous effect of corruption has neither ethnic, religion
nor cultural affiliation. Those whose other profession is to
plead the cause of suspects other than in the courts must come
to the full realization that such opportunities are not
available”. He said the EFCC under his watch will be “ vigorous
and uncompromising” in the enforcement of existing laws within
its jurisdiction.
Lamorde also stressed the need to beam more searchlights on the
private sector since, according to him, “grand corruption cases
particularly those involving Politically Exposed Persons, PEPs
has strong private sector connection and support.
Speaking earlier, the Attorney General of the Federation and
Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke said the Ministry
of Justice is in the process of carrying out comprehensive
review of all the anti corruption laws to imbibe international
best practices and to enhance coordination amongst anti
corruption agencies. He said the theme of this year’s
celebrations “Act against Corruption Today” is apt as it enjoins
people to go beyond the talk and move to action. He also called
on governments, anti corruption agencies, civil society
organization and religious leaders to take concerted actions
against corruption.
This year’s international anti-corruption day was organized by
Inter Agency Task Team which comprises of 21 government
agencies. The inter agency Task team is the coordinating
platform of various government agencies with Anti corruption and
