Bauchi State Governor Isa Yuguda led some
politicians from the North- East zone
to endorse the Goodluck Jonathan/Namadi
Sambo Presidential ticket on the
platform of the Peoples’ Democratic
Party,PDP .
The endorsement was secured in Bauchi
where Yuguda has never left anyone in doubt
about his pro-Jonathan
position
.The interesting fact however was that
Professor Jubril Aminu- from Adamawa State
like Atiku Abubakar the main challenger to
the president - moved the motion for the
endorsement of Jonathan at the meeting. The
motion was seconded by Ashiek Jarma, a
veteran politician from the
region.
Professor Aminu’s role came as a surprise
because he has of late softened his long -
running opposition to Atiku in Adamawa state
to the extent that many now see him as a
political ally of the former vice president.
Atiku who is from the North -East is
the Northern PDP consensus candidate
.Presidential aspirants from the North
on the party's platform have
repeatedly insisted that Jonathan ought not
to run now .
Before the North - East zone,
politicians in the North central have
reportedly endorsed Jonathan in Nasarawa
state. That was also the case in the South
west last week where Governor Gbenga
Daniel of Ogun State announced in Ibadan
during a meeting with the Jonathan and Sambo
that the zone will vote en bloc for
the president.
But a
socio-political group in the South
West,Yoruba Redemption Group, (YOREG) today
dismissed claims that 585 delegates of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) endorsed
Jonathan.
In a statement signed by Prof. Tunde Malik
on behalf of the association, it wondered
how Jonathan arrived at its figure when at
least 154 delegates who make up the 585
delegates in the South West have not been
elected.
“It is public knowledge that National
Delegates for the PDP Presidential primaries
would be elected on December 28, nationwide.
How did Jonathan know how 154 delegates who
are yet to be elected will vote in the PDP
presidential election”, the group asked.
The association says from its interaction
with delegates across the South West states
where it has its members; it is convinced
that Jonathan cannot record up to 30 percent
of the delegates voting for him.
“What is the factor that will make the
delegates to vote for Jonathan is the South
West? Is it because his tenure as President
has been one of bad luck of the party in the
zone with the loss of Ekiti and Osun States?
It asked.
“The Yoruba’s of the South West believe in
equity and fairness. They believe that the
rotation of power between the North and
South should be respected with the north
retaining the office of President until
2015. They will therefore not support a
President who is running against the
dictates of agreement within the political
party”, the statement concluded.
