2011 polls:NUJ to set up Election Monitoring Group
Newsdiaryonline   Sat Oct 16,2010

COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE CENTRAL WORKING COMMITTEE (CWC) MEETING  OF NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS (NUJ) HELD IN KATSINA ON OCTOBER 16, 2010

The meeting exhaustively deliberated on various issues affecting the Union and the nation, and came up with the following resolutions:

1-    CWC congratulates the nation for attaining the golden age of 50 with modest progress so far made, despite all odds.

2-    The meeting further calls on government to beef up security across the nation to ensure safety of life and property, especially at this critical point of the nation’s history. It also urges  government to address the decaying nature  of infrastructure  especially roads, health, and other social facilities.

3-    While advising  politicians to engage on issues based campaign rather than campaign of calumny,  shun violence and thuggery,  the CWC cautioned journalists to conduct themselves in a  proper manner and be security conscious and not allow themselves to be used by politicians.

4-    To ensure the conduct of credible elections in Nigeria, the CWC resolves to set up an Election Monitoring Group to participate in the monitoring of the 2011 general elections. The CWC also appreciates the tremendous progress made at raising the tempo of actions on matters affecting journalists generally and the holding of lectures/seminars, and regular attendance to international meetings.

5-    The CWC observes with dismay the delay by members to key into the NUJ Group Insurance Scheme and resolves that principal officers of the union at all levels should immediately embark on mobilization of members to fully take advantage of this scheme by getting themselves adequately covered by this policy, in view of its importance to all media professionals

6-    The meeting while thanking the Government and people of Katsina State for hosting this meeting and the warm hospitality,  also notes with satisfying interest the progress so far made by the present administration of Governor Ibrahim Shema  in various strata of development.

                   Signed

Shuaibu Usman Leman

National Secretary
