Nigerian workers have been urged to show greater
understanding of the global economic meltdown by
tailoring their demands to reflect the prevailing
situation which has grossly affected the revenue of
the country and its components units. The Ogun State
Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, stated this in his
Workers’ Day message released in Abeokuta and signed
by his Chief Press Secretary, Adegbenro Adebanjo.
“Over the years Nigerian workers have demonstrated
their patriotism through their immeasurable
contributions to the growth of the country and its
survival. I am sure that they will continue in this
mode as we confront perhaps the greatest economic
challenge of our generation. This is the time for
all of us to come together and
give our best to the survival of our country, we
must all make sacrifice. I am happy to state that we
in Ogun State started it all with the 12 percent
voluntary cut in the salary of political office
holders. , a move which was emulated by permanent
secretaries in the state who also voluntarily agreed
to an eight percent pay cut.
All other categories of workers should emulate this
gesture in the greater interest of our nation,” the
Governor said in the message.
The Governor also
restated the commitment of his
administration to the retention of its
workforce in spite of the economic
meltdown which has adversely affected
its revenue. The Governor said it has
become imperative for the workforce
particularly the unions and associations
to take into consideration the dwindling
finances of the state, the nation and
the economic meltdown in making demands
to enable government carry through its
commitment not to downsize. He appealed
to the Unions to appreciate the
government position not to downsize
which would have been the natural course
of action in a period of dwindling
revenue. The Governor while wishing the
generality of workers a happy May Day
celebration said his administration
would continue to give adequate priority
to the welfare of workers in Ogun State.
