Daniel appoints new commissioners,signs 2011
appropriation bill
Newsdiaryonline Wed March 9,2011
For effective governance only the right caliber of leadership
should be entrusted with public office. Ogun State Governor,
Otunba Gbenga Daniel, stated this in Abeokuta during the
swearing in ceremony of two new commissioners, a Special
Adviser, and a permanent secretary. The new Commissioners are
Chief Kehinde Adebanjo, Housing, and Otunba Emmanuel Oluyemi,
Works. Mr. Abiodun Ogegbo is the new Special Adviser on
Employment Generation while Mr. Muyiwa Adenopo, takes charge of
the Ministry of Women Affairs as permanent Secretary. Governor
Daniel charged the political appointees to put in their best to
leave their footprints on the sand of time despite the limited
period they will serve in his administration.
He said his administration would ensure that the leadership of
the public service it was bequeathing to the next dispensation
was one that would engender efficiency, resourcefulness,
industry and good qualities. He described the four appointees as
respected and accomplished professionals who would bring
uncommon commitment to office. Chief Adebanjo replaces Mrs.
Jokotade Odebunmi who is now the running mate of Prince Gboyega
Isiaka, the gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Party of
Nigeria, PPN, in Ogun State while Otunba Oluyemi replaces Prince
Segun Adekoya who is seeking election into the House of
Representatives on the platform of PPN; Chief Ogegbo replaces
the late Hon Sesan Lawal who died last year.
The Governor has also restated his commitment to the development
of the State stating that his administration would not be
distracted by the antics and scheming of enemies from within and
without. The Governor gave this indication while signing into
law the 2011 appropriation bill passed by the Hose of Assembly.
Otunba Daniel thanked the legislature for the prompt passage of
the N105 Billion budget. He said that the main driving force of
the budget would be the completion of all- going projects that
were critical to the development of the State. He said the fact
that State’s budget rose from N23. 76 Billion in 2003 to N 105.
55 Billion in 2011 showed a marked improvement in the economic
outlook of the state since his administration under the watch of
his administration.
.....Ogun
to pay compensation to flood victims, needs N7billion to prevent
recurrence
The Ogun State Executive Council has approved the payment of
N285 Million naira to victims of last October’s flood disaster
that ravaged Isheri and its environs in
Obafemi Owode and Ifo Local Government area of the State. It has
also put the cost of reconstruction of roads and bridges damaged
by the flood and permanent measures to curb future occurrence at
N7Billion. The approval came following the submission of the
report of a committee set up by Governor Gbenga Daniel to
devise measures to prevent reoccurrence and verify the claims
of residents of communities who were worst affected by the
Flood. The Chairman of the Committee ,Dr Adeleke Adedoyin who is
also the States commissioner for environment , said 1638
residents in the affected area submitted a claim of N 2biilon
naira but his committee which included Civil Engineers,
Estate Surveyors, and furniture experts came up with a figure
of N570 Million through verification. The committee however
recommended that the State Government should defray the losses
by 50 per cent hence a total of N285 Million was
recommended as financial assistance to the victims of the
disaster. The Monetary assistance would be disbursed to victims
on March 18, 2011. The
committee said the reconstruction of roads and bridges
damaged by the flood would cost N2Billion while
measures to prevent future occurrence including creation of
three artificial lakes, de-silting of Oyan Dam and dredging
along the path of Ogun River was put at N5 Billion . Already
some roads and bridges damaged by the flood including the Oke
Igbehin twin bridges are undergoing reconstruction while some
have been completed.
The Governor in Council while accepting the recommendation of
the committee expressed appreciation to President Goodluck
Jonathan for the release of N700 Million to tackle damages cost
by the flood disaster but noted that it was a far cry from the
N7Billion required to tackle the problem. The State executive
Council therefore urged the Federal Government to come to the
aid of the State through the ecological fund.
