The  senior oil workers’ union, PENGASSAN has fixed  Saturday , January 14 as the date it would shut down oil and gas production in Nigeria if government fails to yield to popular demand over its removal of fuel subsidy.“W e are hereby notifying the Federal Government  of Nigeria and indeed  all Nigerians  that PENGASSAN  shall be forced  to go ahead  and apply the bitter option of ordering the systematic shutting down of oil and Gas production  with effect from  the midnight of Saturday January 14,2012(00.00 hour of Sunday January 15,2012) if the federal Government  fails to yield to the popular agitation of Nigerians on her unacceptable approach to Fuel Subsidy Removal” PENGASSAN said in a statement today.

The union’s  specific  threat  to shut down production came  ahead of a scheduled meeting this evening  in the presidential villa Abuja between President Goodluck Jonathan  and Labour leaders. This meeting may decide whether the government will finally cave in or not.Labour has insisted that the FG must revert to N65 per litre. It even emerged today  that Labour  conceded to agree on  price adjustment but the government remained adamant  yesterday at  a meeting, thus making the strike go into its 4th day.

The meeting with the president scheduled for 5.00PM this evening comes on the heels of another  this afternoon in Abuja with Anyim Pius Anyim, the tough talking SGF.
