Officially, former President Olusegun Obasanjo is
visiting Borno State to commission projects executed
by the Ali Modu Sheriff government.Sources said
Governor Modu Sherif had struggled very seriously to
have Obasanjo come and stay in the state for days
and commission projects but it did not happen that
way while he was president. Now, the former president
is going to fulfil the governor's wish even though
he is out of government
A few minutes to 7.00PM today, reports said the
former president had already arrived Maiduguri. He
was said to have paid a visit to the residence of
the Shehu of Borno to condole the royal family over
the death of the late Shehu. And perhaps to
congratulate the new shehu.Reports said the former
presidnt will later head for Government House
Maiduguri, but no official event is known to be on
schedule for the night.
Newsdiaryonline has however learnt that there are
deep suspicions in Maiduguri that there may be more
to former President Obasanjo's visit. Security
sources claim the former President may sneak into
Chad long with the Borno State governor to perfect
their oil deals in Chad. The ex president and Sheriff
are believed to have interests in a yet to be
disclosed major Chadian oil company.'Perhaps it's
just to attend a brief oil business meeting
overnight while they return to continue with
official business ', a Maiduguri resident told
newsdiaryonline.Perhaps suspicion along this line
was fuelled by reports that security has been beefed
up along the Nigerian -Chad border in preparation
for Obasanjo's visit
It was also said however that some of the places
Obasanjo is expected to visit while in the state
include Damasat said to be close to the
border;Abadam and others.
Governor Modu Sheriff ,though elected on the
platform of All Nigeria People's Party ANPP remained
a close associate of president Obasanjo. It was said
that his closeness to the former president helped in
shielding him froM the shackles of the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC. |
