Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has
charged the National Union of Postal and
Telecommunication Employees (NUPTE) to be a
strategic voice for its members and provide
a platform on consumers’ rights in the
Telecommunication industry, saying the
quality of services rendered by the Nigerian
Telecommunication sector remains poor.
Comrade Oshiomhole who was represented by
the Secretary to the State Government (SSG),
Hon. Pally Iriase stated this yesterday at a
Leadership Retreat organized by the union in
Benin City, expressed belief that it will
help NUPTE redefine the challenges and
generate the strategies to address
them.Urging the union to deepen their
organizing drive and sustain the progressive
momentum, Oshiomhole said “this is a highly
globalizing world in which trade union
organization requires more creative and
dynamic strategies”.
The Governor acknowledges the critical role
of Labour and Civil Society to the nation’s
democratic and development process.“As we
prepare for another election, there are very
dangerous signals arising from the
anti-democratic character and conduct of
many of our political elite. The arrogant
rhetoric, ethnic and religious sloganeering,
as well as the persistent violence in some
quarters, suggest that we must ensure that
the electoral
process is not subverted again”.
While assuring that government would
continue to place premium on relationship
with organized Labour, Comrade Oshiomhole
said government will provide enabling
environment for the trade union movement in
the overall interest of Edo State.Earlier,
the president of NUPTE, Comrade Sunday
Alhasan said the Post and Telecommunication
Sector is at the center of modern global
economy.
“It is both the creator and key facilitative
engine that has propelled the global
advances in production, distribution and
exchange of goods and services that
defines this modern era”, he said.
