No fewer than 19 Tokunbo vehicles
illegally imported into the country have
been intercepted by the Oyo/Osun command
of theNigeria Customs
Service.Speaking with newsmen in
Osogbo,Osun State capital,the Area
Comptroller of the command,Mondu Hassan
Muhammed noted that the command is fully
ready for the smugglers.
Muhammed pointed out that the menance of
smuggling could not be stamped out
completely in the country but Nigeria
custom service is ready to reduce it to
the barest minimum.He said that custom
Service has an important role to play in
income generation to the government and
the command have been making effort to
encourage citizenry to come and pay
their excise duties on imported
goods,adding that the command has also
been enlightening the people that deal
with rice smuggling to the country that
they should be ready to pay duties
on rice product.
He also noted that lack of adequate
equipments and personnel are the
problems hindering the activities of the
command and its command for Oyo and Osun
have 537 staff.
According to him,from January to July
this year,over #20million have been
generated from the command to the purse
of Government while the target given to
the command is #30billion per annual
which is #2.5billion per month.
Muhammed commends the Controller General
of Nigeria Custom service,Abdullahi
Dikko Ndeh for his six point agenda ,
ranging from increment in
salary,training and retraining of men
and officers of the Nigeria Custom,more
accomodation and a host of others.
Meanwhile, the Area Controller also paid
a condolence visit to the Palace of
Ataoja on behalf of Controller General
to commiserate with the people of Osogbo
on the recent demise of Oba Iyiola
Oyewale Matanmi111 where he said that
the death of late monarch was very sad
to the Nigeria Custom service.
He presented a letter of
condolence which was received by the
Ataoja Second in command,the Ajagunna of
Osogbo,Chief Gabriel Oparanti and prayed
God to give the Kingmakers the wisdom to
choose the monarch that would be like
late Oba Oyewale.
Chief Oparanti while responding ,said
that the community appreciate's the
custom service for their visit to the
palace, stressing that the late monarch
had contributed immensely to the
development of the town which they would
be remembering him for.

SUSPEND THREE MONTHS SRIKE

Osun state lecturers under the aegis of
Council of Academic Staff Unions of Osun
state owned Tertiary
institutions(CASUOSTI) have suspended
their three months old indusrial action
embarked upon.
This was contained in a special release
issued at end of their meeting with
Executive Governor of Osun
state,PrinceOlagunsoye Oyinlola and
jointly signed by Comrades Ropo
Jekajaiyeoluwa,Rufus Oyeniran and
Olubisi Ige,the chairman,Secretary and
Public Relation Officer(PRO)
respectively and a copy was made
available to Newsdiary Correspondent in
Oosgbo.
The statement read thus"we wish to
notify the entire members of the
academic unions and the general public
that the indusrial action embarked upon
by all academic staff is hereby
suspended as directed by congresses of
various institutions held on Tuesday
August 17,2010".
According to the statement,the council
took this action in the overall interest
of the state to allow for peaceful
resolution and also acknowledge and
appreciate the efforts of various
stakeholders for their
intervention,specifically the unique
effort of the Honourable members of Osun
State House of Assembly,the Head of
service,the Chairmen of Governinng
councils,officials of federal Minisry of
Employment,Labour and Productivity,Party
leaders and most importantly, the
maturity and fatherly disposition of His
Excellency,Prince (Dr)Olagunsoye
Oyinlola in his determination to resolve
the impasse.
