Mr Goodluck Jonathan was earlier today in Abuja  sworn -in as Nigeria’s new President and Commander -in -Chief of the Armed Forces. The Oath of Office was administered  by Justice Katsina-Alu ,the chief Jutice of the federation. The swearing in ceremony, which was attended by Jonathan’s wife Patience, governors and top shots of the government, effectively transfers Presidential powers to Goodluck Jonathan who is from oil-rich Bayelsa state in the Niger Delta region.

President Jonathan pledged in his remarks to ensure credible elections, good governance and strengthen the anti -corruption campaign, the same lofty promises he made shortly after the Senate endorsed him as Acting President Under the Doctrine of Necessity months ago.

The task of seeing  Nigeria out of the woods effectively rests on Jonathan’s shoulders now .And he has assumed the mantle of leadership at a time the campaigns for the 2011 presidential elections seem to have begun with aspirants indicating serious interest.

Many are eager to know whether Jonathan will run.Newsdiaryonline learnt from politicians in Abuja  that Jonathan  is seriously eyeing the 2011 presidential election. But scenarios are being built .Final decisions will be made  as soon as practicable

The major hurdle in Jonathan’s way is the insistence of the North that the next president in 2011 should come from the region in line with the zoning formular of the PDP. Whether this accord will be respected remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, it is end of the road for Alhaji Umaru Musa YarAdua as the remains of the immediate past president were buried in Katsina today.Thousands of people had attended the funeral.Among the dignitaries included some serving and former governosr. His death brings to an end the reckless schemes of Turai YarAdua and her cabal aimed at putting Nigeria in a state of flux up till 2011.What happened on Wednesday May 5,with the death of YarAdua is akin to another divine intervention  during the case of General Sani Abacha in 1998 who died all of a sudden in the midst of rising tension about Nigeria’s future. In YarDua’s case, the tension  seemed to have abated but there was uncertainty about his ill- health, a puzzle resolved by his death .May his soul rest in Peace!
