The Federal Government has said that the
erosion of the core values of ethics, integrity, transparency,
accountability and impartiality in the Public Service had made
it not to meet the expectations of Nigerians.
President Goodluck Jonathan stated this
Tuesday, in Abuja at the Conference on Nigerian Public Service,
organised by the Presidential Committee on the Review of the
Reform Processes in the Nigerian Public Service.
President Jonathan represented by Vice
President Arc Mohammed Namadi Sambo at the occasion said erosion
of these values had “deliberately incapacitated the Public
Service making it lose the required stem and vigour to function
effectively and efficiently to the satisfaction of Nigerians.”
Dr. Jonathan, who acknowledged the aptness
of the Conference, stated that it offered the nation the rare
opportunity to tap into the “enormous intellectual reservoir of
past and present leaders, scholars, eminent jurist and opinion
moulders,”that were assembled.
The President observed that the wide
consultation approach adopted by the Committee particularly by
organising the conference would lead to the attainment of a
reformed Public Service.

He recalled that the Committee was set up
in March 2011 to reposition the Nigerian Public Service and make
it the “most effective developmental Arm, of Government,
particularly in ensuring that it is the efficient driver of the
Transformation Agenda.”
President Jonathan used the occasion to
expresses the determination of government to implement the
recommendations of the Committee noting “we are hopeful that
they are capable of transforming our society for the better.”
The Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Sule
Katagum, (Wazirin Katagum), observing that Nigeria’s Civil
Service remained one of the best in the world, appealed that
merit and equal opportunity should be major factors in
recruitment and promotion in the Service, adding that discipline
should also be maintained without discrimination.
In his remarks the Chairman of the
Presidential Committee, Alhaji Adamu Fika, (Wazirin Fika),
expressed delight with the support they had been receiving from
President Jonathan.
According to him the Conference aims at
provide opportunities for stakeholders to rub minds towards
providing solutions that would arrest the alarming decline in
the quality of service delivery in the Public Service, by
ensuring the entrenchment of professionalism in the system.
The Opening Ceremony of the three-day
Conference with the theme “The Nigerian Public Service:
Challenges and Opportunities,” was graced by prominent
personalities including former Head of State, Chief Ernest
Shonekan. Others were Chief Philip Asiodu, Alhaji Ibrahim
Damcida, Owelle Gilbert Chikelu and Alhaji Yayale Ahmed among
other top serving and retired Civil Servants.
