A
65- year old father of seven and
his children have been the guests of our
Lady of Fatimah Hospital Jaleyemi,
Osogbo in Osun state where they were on
critical list yesterday after eating the
Yam flour for sahur for the beginning of
Ramadan.
The
incident occurred in early hour of
Wednesday around 5.a.m., when Mr Kola
Oseni who is a father of seven other
victims was preparing for Muslim Morning
Prayer (salatu Subuhi) in Ofatedo
community via Osogbo in Egbedore Local
Government Area of Osun state.
Speaking on his hospital bed, Oseni who
is a retired Vice Principal and also
doubles as the chairman, Community
Development Council (CDC) in the local
Government area told our correspondent
that he was noticising the strange body
reaction not quite long after he
finished the food and his seven children
also complained of the same and
before he knew what was happening, all
of them started having stomach
aches and they could not control
themselves as they were vomiting
uncontrollably. They were rushed
to the nearby hospital in OsogboHe added
that two of them were vomiting blood
before they reached hospital.
He
pointed out that the family bought the
Yam flour from Ede Main market in Ede
North local area of the state and
attributed their escape from the claws
of death to divine intervention. Some of
the victims include, Musibau Oseni, a
youth corper, Naheem Oseni, a 300 Level
student of the University of Ilorin and
Kabiru Oseni.
He
also said that only the mother of the
house who did not participate in the
Ramadan Meal due to ill-health was
spared of the agony.
As
at the time of filling this story, the
eight victims were still
responding to the treatment in the
hospital.
Chairman, Egbedore Local Government
area, Mr Bamidele Salam in whose
Territory the incident occurred
attributed the incident to poor
processing of food stuff in the country.
He
promised that council officials was
working in collaboration with the state
ministry of health and the Police
towards evacuating the remaining
unconsumed yam flour and also to trace
source of the food item.
Director, Primary Health Centre of the
local government, Dr Elijah Adeyemi said
chemicals used in preparing the yam
flour could be the cause of the
poisonous food.
He
counseled members of the public on the
need to standardize the method of
processing their food.
