Riots in Kaduna,Jimeta and Katsina
Newsdiaryonline Mon April 18,2011
The tension which had
built up over the collation of results erupted last night as
riots broke out in parts of Kaduna
metropolis.Newsdiaryonline
learnt that there were disturbing scenes including burning of
tyres in Kabala
West,Rigasa , Tudun Wada
and Kawo areas
of the metropolis .The breakdown of law and order led to the
declaration of curfew.
Some citizens were
so scared that they relocated to safe places.``We moved
into the barracks yesternight'' said a resident of Badiko
area. But some people were unaware of the riots until they
learnt of the curfew:`I
did not know of the fighting and had even gotten ready to
go to work early this morning .But there was no vehicle in my
area .People told me there is a curfew so Iam back at home’ said
a resident of Mando.
Though it was not clear what really
sparked off the fighting, sources said it may not be unrelated
to the results of the elections which many suspect did not go
far enough in reflecting the true wish of the people.Kaduna has
suddenly become a CPC haven and the resurgence of PDP is
not being taken lightly especially as there were reports that
several CPC votes were declared invalid, according to a source.
There has been no official statement on the
latest outbreak of fighting in Kaduna. But there had been an
explosion on Saturday night at Kabala west.Police authorities
more than a week ago actually discovered dynamites which it said
had been meant to cause mayhem in the city. One person suspected
to be conveying the dynamite to an unknown destination was
killed in an earlier explosion. The police also showed reporters
another victim of the dynamite explosion who was not killed even
though he sustained injuries. He too was one of those carrying
the explosive to an undisclosed place. Some residents of Tudun
Wada said this morning that 'disturbances' were still going on
today.
Riots in Kaduna came on the heels of
similar fighting in Jimeta ,Adamawa State where bonfires
were also reported as protest ensued
yesterday.
Yet another protest broke out yesterday in
Katsina over a rather unfortunate incident said not to be
related to the elections. In Katsina a trigger -happy policeman
who had reportedly gone to joint for `smoking Indian
hemp’ had shot and killed an innocent boy. This parked off riots
leading to the smashing of several vehicles.
