Umar El-kanemi was the son of late Shehu of Borno,
Alhaji Umar Sanda El-Amin El-kanemi. He was born in
Dikwa Emirate in 1924. He was educated at the Borno
Middle School III. He was appointed as a scribe in
Wali’s office in 1945. As a Last Corporal in 1949 in
the Police, he was later transferred to the post of
Yalema that is Shehu’s representative. The following
year in 1950, he was appointed Veterinary Supervisor
and was posted to Nguru town as the Shehu’s
rrepresentative as well..
He moved to the central office, Maiduguri from there, he proceeded to

Bello University ,ABU and later went to the clerical
training school in the same school in Zaria , in
1953. Mustapha Umar El-Kanemi was elected

Shehu Mustapha Umar El-Kanemi on promotion in 1970
was transferred to Nganzai District a post he held
until he became the Shehu of Borno in 1974. His
selection was one of the longest in recent history
lasting nearly a month because of a slight stalemate
over who will succeed his father .It was learnt it
really does not take time to select a new Shehu,
which may likely be the case now. Untill his death
he was President House of Chiefs Borno, Vice
President Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
